Jak van Waarde builds this "Van W Bass". Description is in Dutch, but maybe a Babelfish translation can give the big picture, at least. van Waarde claims to have taken the Z Bass a step further...
NB: I have not tried it and I´m in no way affiliated with the maker.

I'd like to know about Van Zalinge Z Bass, that I know many of you already know of.
1. Is it hollow body or solid body?
2. What (kind of) pick up it has?
3. Does anybody has any Clear Pictures of the bass from any angle?
I'd like to have a luthier to make a copy of the bass.

I have detailed pictures. I owned a van Zalinge in very good shape. Sold the bass to a German upright player last year.
It's a hollow body (two soundchambers) Van Zalinge used Polytone pickups and later on he developed his own.
Van zalinge has a patent where you can obtain the exact description and principles of his EUB:
Title:Stringed musical instrument Document Type and Number:United States Patent 4242938 Link to this page:http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4242938.html Abstract:A stringed musical instrument, in particular a double bass, having a resonating body of narrow elongate shape, a neck secured to this body and strings extending across the body and neck and across a bridge supported on the front plate of the body. A transverse sound-beam inside the body divides the latter into two separate resonating chambers of unequal size which are acoustically connected by a through-hole in the sound-beam. Below the bridge a bore extends through the body front plate and into the sound-beam to open into the connecting hole of the beam and an electrical pick-up element extends through this bore between the lower side of the bridge and a vibration plate mounted in the connecting hole.

Sorry about delay in response..have been away from computer all day...
Thanks for the links..still a "newbie" navigating the site..will hopefully get better as time goes on...
The question is probably moot now anyway,as I have just purchased an EUB that was described as a Z Bass,but,after looking at the picture of Sting and his machine..I would guess that it is not.
2 things..I don't mind that it's not..I'm still very keen to receive this new family member and see how it sounds,and find out what needs to be done,
and,also..from what I understand..Z Basses (Van Zalinge) were manufactured in small numbers (250??) in the 1950s and 1960s??
The instrument that Sting is playing looks far too modern to be of that era.
The Bass that I have just purchased seems much more in keeping with that era,designwise, et al.
I will post photos of this instrument when I receive it.Perhaps one of the members with more experience than I will be able to help with a maker or take a guess at it's origins

I'm about to buy a Van Zalinge EUB, and in forum i read that the first 50 are originally handcrafted by van Zalinge himself. The curent owner says it's an original: how could i check this? Does anybody know?

The bass sounds great, by the way, but the piezo pu under the bridge makes a lot of noise!
