Bridge is a fairly common unit used on late 60's/early 70's Japanese basses. Not surprising as your Vantage was built in the well regarded Matsumoku factory.

You get a replacement bridge easily enough as they are still used on Gibson/Epiphone copy basses. Measure the screws centre to centre then hit up eBay with 3 point bass bridge search, Hosco brand are £70/ unbranded £25 - £30.

I get your reason but say the centre to centre size matches, it doesn't mean the stud diameter and thread will. Fittings is where recommending SAE products for items made in metric countries can see you come undone, even the simple things like screws.

JIS screws look almost the same as a Philips.

The drivers are different.

That difference is the main cause behind "cheap stripped screw" complaints on bass forums. JIS drivers will mostly work with Philips fixings, Philips drivers will mostly strip JIS fixings. They're no longer limited to Japan, I find JIS bit are included with boxes of drywall screws more often than not.

I also hear the same "stripped screw" complaints from joiners forgetting to swap bits, impact driver + Philips bit + JIS screw = perfect recipe for disaster 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Right. I get that part. I work with different equipment that has diffeeent spec drivers. Didn’t think of it for this application.

For the OP, there are both metric thread and SAE thread posts for that style of bridge. I believe Hipshot includes, or at least has available, both styles if you go with their bridge. Otherwise, best to figure out what you have, probably the “import” style Kodiakblair mentioned, and find one of those.

I “discovered” JIS screwdrivers after wrecking engine case screws on my vintage Honda motorcycles, feeling like an incompetent.

Nice to see exactly WHY it inevitably happens. Got my JIS drivers, whitworth wrenches, hogshead scale….

Ha! I think I might still have a few Witworth tools about somewhere. Yeah, the story goes that in order to not round out the heads of Phillips screws back when metals weren’t what they are now Phillips drivers and heads were designed for the driver to cam out before it rounded out a screw head. That design didn’t mesh so well with the Japanese concept of a screw head and thus US drivers don’t work so well with JIS screws. Don’t even get me started on the whole Canadian Robertson thing!!! :smug: :roflmao:
