Vapid Super Bowl Performance

I mostly heard it (less than impressed), but was heating up Mexican food, fajitas, beans, and rice. And grabbing a dark beer called Bitches Brew. Really from DogFish Head Brewing. Killer stout.

Dogfish and Miles Davis cover art. A great recommendation, for sure. Most Dogfish styles dont impress me, besides that one, 60 minute, and another special edition called American Beauty that has granola in it.

yeah that's kinda how art works. you get to judge it and make your own opinions

Dissenting opinions are fine, and people are entitled to them. I don't think they're a viable metric for determining artistic merit in the Weeknd's case, though. His success in "The Muzik Biz" is the metric by how HIS particular artistic merit should be determined, or any mainstream pop-star for that matter. It's Pop... the whole point of it is to be commercially successful.

I made jam this weekend. Is that kinda the same?
Bound to be.

I'd never heard of "the weeknd," but apparently he's like, the most streamed musical person in the world right now...

Wiki lists his "Blinding Lights" as the 6th-most streamed song on Spotify, with 1.9 billion streams.

...which, according to Spotify's per-stream pay rate, means he made about six dollars on it. :D Perhaps in a couple of years, he'll be able to afford the missing "e" in his name.

Also, wondering if he likes to be addressed as "Mr. Weeknd" or just "The".

So it seems that The Weekend spent $7 mill of his own money to produce the half time show. Given that his vox were mixed slow low, perhaps he should have spent more of that on sound and less on flash and awe. Maybe the sound was better if you were running a 5.1 or more system when listening to it, but on our tv only, it was a mess!

You might be old if.... :D

I'm 54 and can say the WEEKND (yes, that's the proper spelling) has come out with some good songs and as others have said, is pretty talented. That said, his halftime performance was "Meh". Our teenage son really enjoyed it, though.

Springsteen, tales of honest working people as told by rich recording artists. So real his ax is relicked. If you can fake the authenticity the rest is easy.
No question, he's a blue collar jersey boy with eclectic musical taste and the gall to lecture the world about its sins. But...to my knowledge his "partsCaster" (Tele body w 50's Esquire neck) was beat to hell when he bought it in '72, long before "relicing" was a thing. I first saw it in early '76. It has just gotten funkier over honest time.

Whoever the guy is, he seems to have loads of talent and can sing. That said, that show was definitely not my cup of tea (and I like tea).

Artistically, I couldn't grasp what he was trying to convey (and the jockstraps on the heads made me chuckle) - but that that's mostly on me, not him. But I try to avoid trashing someone else's art just because it didn't resonate with my old-school self.

And... he makes waaaaaaay more than I do, so what do I know?

The Weeknd's performance didn't do much for me... maybe it's just because I'm not familiar with his music. I thought he had decent voice, so maybe I'll check out some of his other stuff. The costumes apparently followed a story line he's been building for months. Unfortunately, a lot of people like my wife were left asking "why are they all wearing jock straps on their faces?"

On the other hand, I just watched this again and it gave me the chills...

Springsteen...

Such a hero.

Dude was hiding in his bedroom while people like my father were getting arrested and assaulted for protesting in Freehold.

He's never impressed me beyond his music. (...and yes, I actually enjoy some of it.)

"That actually was Springsteen? We convinced ourselves it was a lookalike. Why would they have Springsteen, someone identified with New Jersey, act like a midwest farmer? That's why we thought it wasn't actually Springsteen."

Doesn`t putting out an album titled "Nebraska" give you Mid-west cred??

+1. Me and my wife were on the fence. I thought it was him, but it did seem like a joke. We both questioned why that would make anyone want to buy a Jeep.

Ok. I'm gonna say it. Who the Hell is the Weekend? I am surprised when I woke up today and checked and no one else is talking about the Super Bowl Halftime extravaganza on TB.

I won't outright say it sucked. I mean I guess people like that form of vapid, blech and I won't question the man's talent. Definitely something that I would not buy into. I guess he is following in a long series of poor Super Bowl Halftime shows.

I think the Joan Jett / Miley Cyrus Pregame performance was better and at least authentic.

What did you think?
I just watch the highlights the next day. I haven't watched it in years. The last one I watched was Terry Bradshaw and the Steelers in 1980. Half time shows seem too over the top or something and almost always not so good performances or band choices. Although I saw the Paul McCartney performance on a repeat show. It was cool.
