Double Bass Velvet strings megathread part III

I'm using Animas now after a few years with Blues, and haven't made up my mind yet. On my bass the way I play the Animas seem to have a more complex sound skewing a little in the gut direction. The Blues are brighter with a little more growl. Both are bowable, but neither would be my choice if I were getting orchestra gigs.

Is this string about to break? Approx 9 month old Anima D.

No, it won´t brake easily because of that. That´s a usual sight with Animas I´m afraid. Shifting starts to get tricky if you have those in lower positions :)
SMO if you want to compare Blues against Animas go String matrix page by Herve Jeanne. You can hear the sound samples there. Great pages by Herve!

What does SMO mean? Have you used both Blues and Animas?

IIRC Velvets come with a 1 year guarantee. I have a set of Compas 180's about 1 1/2 yrs old with several areas like that but all under the strings so they don't hinder playing. They still sound great
I liked my Compas a lot but when they went dead I switched to Animas cause tying those knots in just the right spot made installation very difficult.

You won't like the Animas for Arco. I don't get any classical calls these days and don't bow much more than footballs on my gigs. I do practice a bit Arco, but no one's listening but me.
I actually kinda liked playing arco on Animas when I used them. Not ideal if you’re doing serious chamber and orchestra playing, but they can certainly be bowed and sound pretty good. The new G string is a little easier to bow also compared to the previous one.

smo is the avatar who asked about these strings :) Yes I´ve used both sets. On my bass the blues were very difficult to bow but Animas were ok with that PC arco sound. Pizz is great with both sets. Blues have more sustain but Animas have more complex sound with enough sustain. Like REISKA said somewhere here Animas are a missing link between guts and steel strings. Blues are thinner and felt a bit weaker and almost too loose for my taste. They have a nice organic sound though and are cheaper and maybe a bit longer lasting.
