Jeff-

I have followed you on different threads and enjoyed and learned a lot from them. You also reminded me once not to acknowledge people that only want to pick fights and are not open to actually learning, and people that can't distinguish the difference bewteen art and acedemia. Don't get sucked in.:)

It's a rare oportunity to be able to communicate with someone so willing to share thier knowledge. Let's take advantage of that (Jeff's presnece on TB) and keep to the subject of leaning music!

Ignore 'em all. They are subtle, they are overt, but you can always tell somebody who doesn't have something to offer, and often covers it carefully with how they word things. Some guys are clear, they just want to take a punch at me. I like these guys because I can discuss with them (if they are interested) what ails them about what I say.

Has anyone else noticed that when I asked a couple of guys who had problems with me as a person, to spell out specifically their objections about my comments about what I have said, that not one guy responded? Even when I give them a chance to discuss their problems with what I say, they disapear into the background again.

I like Talkbass because I don't feel that I tell anybody anything that isn't verifiable. As a teacher I have never had a failure from any student who learned how to play by learning music (more about this word later). Music lessons are simply without fault. But guys who philosophize about learning never improve because they aren't dealing with the root problem of their musical lives, their bass and what to play on it. They are like those unfortunate guys who lay crystals on their chest to cure themselves from cancer. Many believe in this, but all of them have died via this treatment. Some guys just want to hold onto what they believe and would rather go down with the ship instead of believing that the ship may have been built with bad wood.

This is not a challenge, this is a suggestion. I want you to solo over an Eb-7 Ab7 Dbmaj7 sequence and post it here (if you have the technology to do this). I have a prediction that you won't be able to do it! If I am wrong, then I will apologize on the spot. But, I don't think that I am. Do this and we can hear your playing. I certainly can make a couple of comments if you wish. Good luck!

Thanks for clarifying that it's not a challenge. It would have come across as one, otherwise.
I don't have the technology to do it "cleanly", but I can do it (handheld recorder rather than direct to a board), and I'll be glad to solo over a ii-V-I in Dbmaj, and be appreciative of your comments. I'll probably do it in either another thread (and PM you) or PM you directly - again, I don't want this thread ("tell me about Victor's camp") to come down to "Can Jonathan solo well?" - that confuses "how well Jonathan can solo" with both "what Jonathan learned" and "what Victor taught" (which are three separate logical entities).

It'll take me a day or so - I'm in the office today, rehearsing until late tonight, and have a full work schedule tomorrow. I'll whip something together before Friday.

Thanks for wishing me luck - it's not what I need. Continued improvement, inspiration, focus, discipline (and at the moment, good health) - those I need. Luck - not so much.

oh crap..I just googled jeff berlin!!! hahahaha
I like his style and bass philosophy....ahahhhhaaaa
omg I am not apologizing but jeff you got some issues....

call me 540 290 1768
would love to discuss!

I invite you to clarify the issues that you feel that I have. What have I said that you find objectionable! Please be specific. Thank you!

Anyway......before this thread gets closed, maybe back on topic? And continue the current discussion in another thread?

If this thread gets closed, it won't be by what I have said. I don't insult people. I dismiss learning principles that are flawed. I invite people to behave and spell out what they have objected to in my comments. Why should anyone shut down a thread simply because some may not agree with my comments? It behooves Talkbass members to act like gentlemen and state your objections with my comments. thanks.

the problem jeff is that you assumed i am not doing the learning stuff and labled me as a cliche hippy souls artist..
that is why i went off on this rant..you are not wrong only your style is faulty and your opinions are worthless due to your lack of knowledge of the people you are talking to!!!!

Am I the only one who caught this? Seriously... Jeff's right, but you went nuts because of the delivery?

Some here, for reasons unknown to me (besides points Jeff has laready made- laziness, youth, etc.),reject what Jeff has to say. Given the opportunity, like the one I had, to study with him, your playing WILL IMPROVE, because he teaches music- academics, not art. Music is the foundation of the house; what you add to it is the paint on the walls, the carpet, etc. Without the foundation, the rest of that stuff is pointless.

But hey, at least you feel good about yourself.

i agree....it's just something i've seen where a thread gets shut down for being off topic from the original intent of the thread. that's all.

Not really. all men are equal in gods eyes.

..but i dont belive you would have flipped out if it was me and not the famous JB.

please believe me I would have..I really did not recognize the name at that time ...I know who he is....
he is an awesome player and from NY too like me...
He just made one small mistake in the bigger picture of things and in MY PERSONAL opinion it was sacrilege..it's like using the N word.....

Good for you. You understood exactly what I was asking for and you understood that my intention was to offer comments that can help you to play better if you wish. I am quite impressed that you took this the right way.

Make your clip, post it here and I will check it out in the next day or so. Again, you are my kind of guy because you totally got me. Some don't! Congrats!

Damn right, Jeff - you're a gentleman and some straight-talking never hurt anyone.

Jeff omg you are an awesome bass genius!!!!
but please do not disagree with me that there are possibly more than one way to get to that point..that is all!!!!

anything is possible in this world.....you just have to want to do it....
what if I wanted to call abcdefg 1r5If^h?
would it matter?
it's my way...i am not imposing it on you ..you wanted to impose your way on me and the world..that is what I felt from your original comment~

in fact if we met i bet we would hit it off great...

you are truly talented...I like your style too..

but i wanted you to leave my comment as a simple comment not that I was making a mistake on your assuming my progress..

LOVE YA JEFF
no crap
you rock!

Many thanks! I only tell the truth even if it flies in the face of popular opinion. I never have regarded what is politically popular or what the majority feels about things. The last place to get good advice is from a group who love to hang together because their buddies see things just the way that they do. Just read some comments on this particular thread and check out the negative ones. Nobody has stated facts or clearly defined their objections to what I say. Why? Because they all believe the same thing, even if it is wrong!

The night of the vote on health care, a guy stood up and said one of the most profound things I ever heard. Maybe some of you remember this! He said (and I quote) Right is right even if nobody is right! And wrong is wrong even if everybody is wrong!.

So many people here are wrong because they don't know the topic that they believe in. This is why I am here. If I can offer some new principles about how to play, perhaps the bass world in particular, and the music world in general will be better off, even if I have to do this in the face of a great majority who have a problem with what I say.
