The thing that makes Victor Wooten so special is not what he can play or how many different things he can do on the bass.
It is the message of what he teaches, Victor always talks about what you are really trying to bring across the audience. The Music. At the end of the day it is all about Music and you. It took me almost 10 years to finally, six months ago realize that all the gear and all of the skill in the world doesn't amount to anything if you have no meaning behind it.
That is what makes Wooten a world class player. At the end of the day it all boils down to music and our love of music.
The bass is just the extension of which we choose to express our selfs through music.
Most people I know would argue that it is about the music before anything else..
...should really go without saying.
V.Wooten seems just one person that likes talking about it a lot, which I suppose is not a bad thing as he reaches all those poeple who I am sure benefit from it.
Listening to him play says quite a lot though in itself IMO.
I can see where people dish out the hate on him, Victor seems to come across as smug which I can't really see at all.
It may go with out saying, but many many people don't get what is the core goal is. I fully admit I was one of those people. I am glad that Victor does it, I am also glad that other players like Jeff Berlin for example bring the same point across.
Ah. I'm mistaken. I thought it was universally accepted that Victor wasn't anything special, other then a very good technical player.
So, clearly, that's where i had hoped this would discussion would gravitate towards.
He's fast and technically skilled, but he lacks the groove Vic has.
Umm....yeah....
Here:
I'm sure Vic is worried........
Just watched (suffered?) through his whole "solo"........
Did I ever put in my profile I give lessons????
Im going to guess that this dude is actually a guitarist that has either converted to bass or just plays one in this band. I could easily picture him shredding on an Ibanez RG. It just seems odd to me that somebody could have decent chops like that without having any concept of actually playing a bass.
