Uh, this guy sucks. I mean, he does in the video.

I actually was reading some of the thread, so I kinda made it to the part where he starts explaining and playing slowly. When he plays slow, it does not sound like music. And then when he speeds up, it sounds like garbage. I mean, you have to be carrying around a built-in appreciation for managing to play fast in order to enjoy this kind of stuff. If "enjoy" is the right word. I think part of the teenage process is you like to feel intimidated by someone's prowess on a level you can understand. It's all about magnitude. Totally different from an appreciation of technique.

I don't see how discussing Wooten is even relevant here. That guy, even though I'm not crazy about his style, is freakin' awesome. Watching Groove Workshop made me a better player immediately. Totally dissolved the fear I have of screwing up while improvising in informal situations.

I mean, whatever, the video is just a snapshot of one dude on one day. Maybe he's a real sensitive dude usually.

Well I'm not going to jump on the Victor bandwagon, so to speak, but let me clarify exactly what I mean by that.

I don't find Victor wickedly musical sometimes either (some of his double thumbing solos get kinda ridiculous), where I prefer someone like Marcus Miller more for funk and pop/slap that has more soul and melody to it. That is personal preference to be totally honest, and I still respect Victor as a great player...his style just doesn't sit with me as one I enjoy very much on a "musical" level as opposed to a "technical" level.

That being said, this guy isn't "bad" either. I was expecting something atrocious but he has some chops and has clean playing as well...as someone had mentioned before, it kind of reminded me of Billy Sheehan (not a huge fan of his really lol). As a rock bassist, this guy is pretty good and has some real clean technique, but funk and rock are a TOTALLY different ballgame when it comes to bass. As a rock bassist, this guy is pretty good...but him and Victor are your classic "apples to oranges" comparison that doesn't really get us anywhere lol.

On reading this, I decided to check out the trailer for it on Youtube and must say that I am impressed with the concept of this DVD. I'll more than likely be picking one up for myself as a nice stocking stuffer. Thanks for mentioning it!

This guy seems to be full of tricks to blaze around the neck, but he doesn't execute them cleanly, and he doesn't seem to have a solid feel to work on.

No. Why should I say such? I don't think there is any such thing as a "top." There are many bassists whose playing I much prefer to Wooten's.

I couldn't even get past the 3 minute mark before I started skipping forward. The thin tone from the super light strings was just killing me.

Mr Wiggle, you sir, must have eaten the hallucinogenic sushi. You will be alright in a few hours, stay away from sharp objects. Although the blue cat print bass is nice touch, he isn't quite there yet with musicality.... uhmmmm.

+1 to pretty much every thing that's been said. His tone is also quite painful to me. I'm playing a $200 through a $100 amp with not even a year experience, and I have to say, his tone sounds cheap compared to mine (not trying to brag....).

Anyways, the best Japanese bassist is Tetsuo Sakurai. He's just a leetle closer to Vic's level.

That, IMO, makes him a better bassist in itself.

i had the incredible pleasure of seeing Bela fleck last week, and the INCREDIBLE chance to meet and talk to Victor Wooten about a few things. all i could say is that this guy has quite a bit to go before reaching the musicianship and humanity of Mr. Wooten.

I'm not particularly impressed by this guy. If I were to try to execute what he does, I'd do so about on par with a week's effort. As has been said, he's not clean. That bothers me. At least when I noodle publicly, I keep it clean.
