Victor Wooten is second teir skill wise now

Victor Wooten is technically WAY better than Masaki, but I'll listen to Animetal and Zigoku Quartet all day every day rather than Wooten even once. No disrespect to Wooten, he's a fantastic player. I just like what Masaki plays better. Yes, his live solo is abominable. However, his vast body of work contains more than enough amazing moments to make up for a few instances of self-indulgent wankery.

Holy Thread Resurrection, Batman!

There is a reason this Masaki dude can do stuff I can't do. It's because I want to play BASS and have ZERO desire to wank uncontrollably, so I never practice or develop those types of chops. I'm sure that's the case with most players here. I can say just as much with a whole lot less, and watch the sexy girls dance instead of the the throbbin' sausage crowd at a shread head show.

I always like to use David Gilmour as a benchmark for anything g****r-wise and bass-wise as well.
I swear to GOD it is NOT the notes you play more than the notes you DON'T play.
There are literally 20 million g****rists that can play 4 to 5 times as fast as David, but so far NONE have the tone AND the feel.
I never understood why playing fast is supposted to prove your good to begin with anyways... wouldn't Vinny Vincent still be considered the best ever?

Zero feeling in this guy's playing. Vic is technically very very good, but LISTEN to his attitude and feel. I can see Vic play the same song on two different days and feel something completely different.

I think everyone is being completely rude, and definitely too harsh on this Masaki fellow. He's not the one who compared himself with Victor, so give the guy a break. Also most people here are taking his playing out of context, to me his solo's are no less musical than the solo's of Billy Sheehan. and just like Billy's solo's their not representative of how he actually plays within the context of a song. and as far as his technique is concerned, and the comments about him having too much movement, to be honest that's all part of the show, allot of Japanese metal is like this, everything is flamboyant, and exaggerated. Also If you listen to his playing with the rest of the band, in the context of a song, then he dose serve the song and play with groove.

Do I think Masaki is as talented a player as Victor Wooten... probably not, but Victor is a very special player. But Masaki is clearly a very talented musician, and also it is too subjective as they play in such different genres. It would have been fairer to compare this guy to Billy Sheehan, or perhaps John Myung. But essentially its futile comparing any musicians, as music is entirely subjective.

Poor Victor! All this time he's been "competing" with this Masaki guy from Japan...and he never even knew it!

Just curious about a few things:

1) What exactly is this "top" of which you speak? "Top" of what?

2) Even if there actually exists this hierarchy that you seem to imply, how exactly is it defined? On what basis? And by whom?

3) With all this alleged "competition" continually occurring among the players, who would ever have the time & energy necessary to create actual music (remember that? music?) ...as opposed to engaging in all this hyper-athletic, high-speed wanking by which you seem to be so incredibly impressed? :eyebrow:

Pshhh. Guy sounds like the 14-year-olds I see at GC all the time.

Anyway, first, I wouldn't necessarily consider Wooten to be the zenith of bass players. I doubt he would say he is either. I don't think he'd be into that kind of wankery anyway. Sure, the other guy is good at what he does, but what is its relevance to music?
