Victor Wooten is second teir skill wise now

Zero feeling in this guy's playing. Vic is technically very very good, but LISTEN to his attitude and feel. I can see Vic play the same song on two different days and feel something completely different.

I agree, great technical skills, but does not have his own sound which is part of his souless playing.

Ah. I'm mistaken. I thought it was universally accepted that Victor wasn't anything special, other then a very good technical player.

So, clearly, that's where i had hoped this would discussion would gravitate towards.

+1. I am not particularly into Wooten, but I do respect that he has a particular style and sound that is difficult to emulate, and that he is technically very proficient. This Masaki is not really interesting or groundbreaking to me, and technically Vic is still pretty far ahead, IMO.

I find it very boring ... it remind me of Billy Sheehan playing pentatonic scale super fast with tapping part but feel so empty.

I'm more impress by Wooten or by many technical death metal player. You can feel what they want you to feel.

Or everyone should look at Micheal Manring and Zander Zon. They are both very very very impressive, I don't see anybody playing like them.

Vic is second to none when it comes to playing bass. He is far beyond "average' as someone called him and yes, he has given the bass community a "shot in the arm". this guy has chops but he doesn't have the musical maturity to round it out. We'll take another listen in a few years..

Much of what you say in this post is purely subjective. Your assumption that Victor Wooten is second to none, especially, might rub a whole lot of people the wrong way. I certainly do not agree that Wootens playing, musical style and especially his tone are the end all be all of bass playing. Just sayin'.

I said Vic's playing was "second to none"... not "first to all". As for who gets rubbed the wrong way? Thats not a concern.

They should have a bass playing competition and the winner could get to go on stage with KISS & play a song with KISS and meet Gene Simmons and get an autographed bass that looks like an AXE as a prize for winning the competition for best bass player and they should put it on YouTube so we can all vote and tell them why they are better than each other and watch the videos of how they won and the concert too because that would be most awesome and make them famous...

also IMO Vic's best stuff is in a band context w/ the F-tones and not his solo stuff, which admittedly is THE only bass-centered or focused stuff (aside from Beller) I really dig. he has way more to offer than just his triplet-slap trick.

Yes, I agree. First of all this guy was impressive, even though I do not really care for the "virtuoso" type of playing.
Secondly, I think Victor is awesome and seem like a great dude. I do not care who is worse or better than victor, he is very interesting to watch and he introduced some nice tricks into bass playing.

I've seen Victor play live (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones). He covers every angle expertly. I have no idea what the song was, but Victor played a straight-up disco groove with such precision and feel that I remember it as much as his solo.

Victor would own this dude. Hell, all Larry Graham would have to do is play that one funky down beat note, and he would have more groove than this dude.

Don't get my wrong... he plays well, he syncs well with the keys, but not better than Wooten.
