Vintage Kustom stuff?

Couldn't resist a cruddy cellphone pic of the rig that saw me through 3 years of constant touring!!

Yay Kustom200!!

iirc they used standard 2N3055's in them.

Those are the finals i presume?

If i recall, the drivers were RCA part code 65859 and 65860.

Both very hard to find replacements for... modern places want $34 a piece for them, and i have to buy them by the dozen! ... and that was only one place on the entire internet that had them.

I've used TI32C and TI31C's as replacements... now on to repair a blown final!

You see, i got a $34 Kustom Amp off ebay... a Monitor III... but it was blown. :hmm:

So, OP, nice score. :) Enjoy it!

ALTHOUGH, I do have a WOODSON 2x15 cabinet.. which is more or less Kustom guts built in Bolivar, Missiouri. ;)

Boof sound! LOL I remember.
My impression having owned 2 2x15 and one 200 head was that the Jensens actually could deliver more sound then the JBLs which would fart sooner but had a characteristically better sound before the breakup.
Those cabs with a tube head were surprisingly better than with the Kustom head.
They were a great value as Sunns were very expensive by todays standards.
Yeah I loved some Sunn 200 and 2000s.

+1

This was my experience, too.

Wow, not my experience at all with the JBL's. In fact, later on, I ditched the Kustom head for a Peavey MarK IV, and never got the farts with the JBL's. Of course, I did'nt have everything dimed, but, was loud enough for rock gig levels.

This is my blue sparkle Kustom bass rig;

I have the original CTS drivers, but the cab is loaded with JBL D140F's because... The few times I've actually gigged it, I've sorta "cheated".
I run a shielded cable from one of the input jacks to one of the output jacks, plug into the Kustom and run a cable from the psuedo "output" jack to this;

sitting on a stand side stage. I run a speaker cable from the Sunn back to the D140 loaded Kustom cab.
Well, at least the rig is period correct. :rolleyes:
I use a coiled cable from my bass; looks very retro indeed!

I've had old timers comment that they "forgot how good those old Kustoms sounded". They generally get a good laugh when I show them what I'm actually doing.

Haha... mine's still not grounded... i get zapped frequently.

I use to wrap a bandana around the mic because electricity would jump to my septum and lip piercings and zap the crap out of me.

Got a will made out? :eek: What you describe could kill you or someone else using the amp.

Get that damn thing GROUNDED. All it takes is adding a 3-connector power cable with the ground connection properly installed.

*BOOF*

Picked it up yesterday!

I'll try to get pics soon, but I've quickly realized that they don't do these things justice. In person it looks so much more amazing. A big blue gorgeous monster! With sparkles!

I haven't got to tinker with it too much but she's definitely a keeper. I did notice that it started breaking up a bit sooner than expected -- not sure if that's normal or not. Hopefully I'll get a chance to open it up this weekend. However, it's a really musical breakup and with a bit of fuzz turns into absolute Sabbath-worship. Nice!

It's definitely got some power, but not nearly as much as the Acoustic/Ampeg beast I normally play through. There's also a bit of an idle hiss, but I'm sure it wouldn't be noticed in a band situation. I really didn't even notice myself past the initial power up. The guy said it had been stashed away for over a year, so maybe I just had to rumble the dust out a bit :smug:

Anyway, yeah, awesome amp -- and extremely S E X Y!
