Vintage Old Fender - I don't get it.

That's because troll threads usually start with someone saying "I don't understand why people.....<insert anything here>". When the OP usually has no intention of learning or understanding anything. They just want to see people get defensive about what is nothing more than a personal preference.

I'm not saying that's you - if you are legitimately trying to learn something then great. But this is nothing new it happens every week.

And it is EXACTLY why I was so hesitant to start the thread in the first place and why I tried (without only limited success) to put a caveat that "I'm not trying to start something, just trying to get some answers". Apparently that was not read or understood as I intended it.

My concern was that my honest quest for knowledge would be mis-construed to be a troll post. But, I gave TB the benefit of the doubt and dove in.

A mistake I won't be making too many more times.

My quest for knowledge is not great enough to put up with the unjustified name calling.

So thanks to all who used this thread as a chance to sing the praises of your vintage Fender basses. I have learned quite a bit from you stories.

Don't question anything Fender. Only Fender praise is accepted. Don't say that a flaw may exist with any Fender. Just say "I've never had that problem. I've never even heard of that problem."

And then there are the people like you, who pop up everytime someone comes to the defense of Fender and ridicules them. That's way more offensive than what the Fender "fanboys" are doing.

So, you assume that anyone that claims they don't have this problem (A-sting nut buzz) is just a Fender loyalist simply denying it because they don't have the heart to besmirch their favorite brand? Sounds like a level of paranoia you have. Fact is, you're here commuting the same act in reverse.

Just because my A string doesn't buzz, doesn't make me a fan boy with a diabolical plan to change the hearts and minds of the Talkbass community.

Indeed. When someone says "I've never had that problem." it's because they've never had that problem, and they're saying it in response to over-arching claims that Fenders (by implication ALL of them) have this certain problem, and they are stating their experience to what is pretty much an unfair and untrue claim by people who have a problem with Fenders. I've done it myself, most recently when someone claimed that Fenders had a problem with neck dive, I voiced my experience that I've never had that problem. I was just stating a simple fact to counter what I (and quite a few others apparently) knew to be untrue. That's not being a fanboy. Ridiculing those who report their positive experiences with Fenders is more fanboy-like behavior than anything.

Subject has been done to death. Always with an analogy of a classic '68 Camaro vs. a 2012 Camaro. New ones obviously a better machine, old one is just totally cooler.

And with respect to the '68.... There's a very finite, and shrinking, pool to draw from.

I can answer this for you..... at least from my perspective.


Nostalgia! I am 43 years old and owning and playing basses built from when I was a kid is an enjoyable experience for me in that it is kind of like holding on to a piece of the past. I used to own some 70's basses when I was a kid and I always wanted some the of the 60's basses I saw older guys playing. I am also nostalgic for 80's Japanese basses like my Yamahas too... and same with old Gibson basses and Stingrays ect.

There is no one size fits all answer to your question, but army bass comes closest to my own perspective.

One of the first REALLY nice basses I've owned was a 1979 Music Man Sabre that I bought in 1979 and kept until 1999. Great bass. Hated to part with it.

Fast forward to 2010...started seeing early Sabres reappear on the market. Nostalgia hit....I bought one. It was like slipping into a comfortable pair of jeans. What it looked like was less important than how it felt or how it made me feel. Bought another. Recently added a 1978 Stingray.

Whther or not they are betteer than the best of today's instruments is irrelevent. They represent the best of what was available in their era and play exactly as I remember them playing when I played them.. Now, would I go out and spend $$$ on a vintage Gibson Ripper, a bass I used to lust after back in that same timeframe? No. I have no real tangible history with that bass and wouldn't know a good one from a not so good one.

Whether they're better or not becomes relevant when the vintage fans start bragging about how much "better" they are just because they are "vintage" when they obviously have no clue.

I was there, and instruments were just like today, some were good, some were stinkers but the vast majority were just average...nothing "best" about them. However, today I find there is a higher percentage of comparatively good instruments especially in the lower price segments.

My Ford Focus ST accelerates faster than a Jaguar XKE, has a higher top speed, is more nimble, gets better gas mileage, has MUCH better electrical and entertainment systems yet an XKE cost many many times more. Why?

Because it represents the best of its era, whether or not it is competitive with what is commonly available now.

Sticking with cars (my other passion.).....

One of my dream cars is a 1963 Corvette split window coupe. Yesterday I drove a 2014 Corvette Stingray. The 2014 will run circles around the '63. Anything the '63 does, the '14 will do better. And the '14 will do things that the '63 could never have dreamed of (navigation, rear camera, remote start, head up display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, heated and cooled seats, I could go on and on). If I were told I could walk away with either, no strings attached, I'd get a migraine trying to make the decision. I'd probably grab the '63 because I know I could get the 2014 anytime I wanted (wallet permitting) but there were only so many '63 split windows ever built and when they're gone, they're gone.

Look, we all have things we are passionate about. It takes a bit of dignity to accept this when you don't share the same passions.

Some folks are honestly passionate about preserving or collecting instruments with historical or sentimental significance.

Why is it "fun" to make them try to articulate this passion, when you obviously don't give a rat's ass about it?
