Current issue 4003 tuners made by Schaller would be a direct fit. If you want correct tuners, RIC still sells the replacement tuners for 4001C64 basses, which are reproductions of the original Kluson tuners used on 4001's whenever the old Grover box tuners weren't sourced.

My thoughts exactly. Kevin offered to refinish it and I said "no-way Jose!". She needs to show her past loud and proud! ;)

There is just a hint of neck dive on the bass, so I may try seeking some lighter tubers, assuming that they exist. The Schallers on it now probably aren't terribly heavy though as they are fairly small.

The bass on weighs 8.75 lbs and the body in particular seems very light and is likely the culprit. I wonder if the Hipshot bridge would add some weight?

The Hipshot is available in aluminum or brass, the brass being heavier. Too heavy by some accounts, though I’d rather have a bass slightly body heavy than neck heavy. The Hipshot HB-6 ultralight tuners have a similar tuner post length and elephant ear size to original Schaller Ric tuners, I’ve been searching for weeks and comparing dimensions. They also have 3/8” posts and smaller ferrules, which will fit with the TRC.

Congrats, you have resurrected and improved on a grindy nasty bass. The black on black looks great. I think you will find the cap mod was a good choice. I use mine often... add some overdrive and that is the real deal vintage 4001 sound. Pop it down and its got much more bottom. Play it in good health my friend!

BTW, where did you find the black truss cover? I have been trying to find one for my black on black. Private message me if you prefer.

To use the HB6 tuner on a RIC, you'll have to ream the tuner shaft holes in the headstock out to 9/16". Hipshot did make a tuner that was a drop in for the original tuner, and they may custom assemble them on a special order basis.
