AL&M used to 'the store'...not anymore.
Russell Scarborough lives about 3 blocks from me: I knew he had left AL&M...didn't know he had opened his own place. Russell does have a couple of nice cds out there...w/ Alpha Music's Dave Hufstedler on bass. It's like the 6-Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Stringed Instrument Repair in Smithfield used to be a great place to hang...IIRC, Future Man's "Drumatar" had its origins at SIR.

Nelson County - About half an hour south of Charlottesville

I used to live in VA Beach. AL&M was great then. Anyone remember Abbey Music on Witchduck? or when Alpha was over in Norfolk?

Favorite used music store in VA Beach (back in the day) was Moe's on the Blvd.

Yes to all! Alpha used to be at Southern Shopping Plaza off of Little Creek. Abbey Music is now an unfinished furniture outlet of something of the like. Chuck (Moe's) is still Chuck.

Oh, MARS is now a Goodwill Thrift Store.

Did you know Alpha Music had two different locations at Southern Shopping Center? The 1st location was small...maybe the size of Moe's Music.

I still have & use the G-K MB300 combo that I bought from Abbey around 1986.
Alan (the owner) gave me a great deal (maybe because he had just opened the store?)...anyway, I told my friend/contact at AL&M that Abbey trumped his price...he tells me "Awww, Alan is just trying to steal our customers". Putz.

Going back even further...1972-
Mason Music was a popular store...on Tidewater Drive (near Southern Shopping Center).
AL&M was called Ambassador Music...a hole-in-the-wall HOUSE that was on E. Little Creek Rd (next 'major' intersection would be Johnston's Rd). I sent my mom in there when I told her I wanted a bass for Xmas. She said the guys were "creepy-looking" but "very nice, helpful, & polite". All I know is she knew more about basses than I did.
Eventually, Ambassador re-located to Tidewater Dr....across the street from the aforementioned Mason Music. Then the name change to "Audio, Light & Musical" (attempted to be more diverse in the type of customers they wanted to attract...i.e. more Churches & Church P.A.s/Lighting)...then the move to N. Military Hwy.
