Virginia Bassists

Hey, any you guys in the Hampton/Newport News area know a guitarist named Brian Forrest?
The name doesn't sound familiar but I don't travel in many musical circles either. I'm mainly into the Top40 Party Band scene. Band's like Slapwater, All That, Rhythm Magik (my band), Tidewater Drive, 10 Spot, Hotcakes, Rhondels, Fuzz Band, Right On, Strictly Bizzness, etc.

Playing a Battle of the Bands tonight at the Peppermint Beach Club. Music starts at 5:15, we go on (headlining) at 9:45. $10 at the door.

Audience cheer vote, so come on out and help out a fellow TB'er.

thanks..I started all my music and bass collecting in 72 in the tidewater area buying my first bass and amp from the "Benny Gould" music shop close to the intersection of Little Creek Rd and Tidewater Drive...Great stories of that Area back then......
My first bass & amp were bought at Benny Gould's in Dec. 1972. I go by that location every day on the way to work-it's a day care center, now (few years ago, it was a vet).
I remember his son Frank was a drum "prodigy". They used to live across from the golf course in Ocean View. Cool house.
I still have the Benny Gould bass, a candle apple red Epiphone; I sold the Univox amp with its 1x15 cab back in the mid '80s.

Hello from Blacksburg. Saw a reply from Floyd. For those who might be interested check out Floydfest, held around the end of July, for what has to be one of the best small festivals in the country. Plus we'll be playing there again this summer.

Very small world....I bought a candy apple red 72 fender jazz and acoustic 370/371 and sold the bass in 79 after a divorce,,,I wish I still had it!!! good memories!!!

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Floydfest though I've never been. I work for VFH the parent organization of the Virginia Folklife Program who usually has a presence there with traditional Virginia artists.

Virginia Beach! I'm 16 and I've been playing for nearly a year, anyone who lives near Alpha Music, hit me up! Looking for someone to jam with, I'm very lonely.

16? Jeez...I've got socks older than you. Let me rephrase the previous question: In what neighborhood do you reside?

You might want to check the bulletin board at Alpha, GC, whatever for others who share the same interests. Nothing polishes up the ol' chops like performing in an ensemble setting. Might even try posting on Craigslist.com. There are 434,000 people in Virginia Beach....you won't be lonely for long!

BTW, as a new TBer, you're required to post a photo of your Mom, hot-looking older sister, or girlfriend posing with your bass. Its listed somewhere in TalkBass's guidelines / bylaws. Believe me, you'll make a lot of new friends quickly.

Hampton...... I need to get out more and meet some of y'all. If you happen to catch a SteamBoat Jack gig please come on up and introduce your self. +1 to Jim @ Winter Sound, best prices and a good hand with electronic repair to boot. Someone asked about a luthier.....Margarite @ Fretnot guitar repair in Newport News is great but has a HUGE waiting list. Kerry Oakley

...you are aware of the 'No "Smoke On The Water" (or "Higher Ground")' understanding, right?
;)

Anyways, sorry about how you're treated. For some reason, they like me...but I could give you a story about the time (1978) when Eddie the owner (worked at AL&M at the time)sold me my StingRay bass.
;)

Forgive the newbie question, what is the "no Smoke of the water rule" or higher groung rule

Ever seen Wayne's World?

Anyway, back in my day, "Smoke On The Water" was NOT something you wanted to play when trying out a guitar/bass at a music store.
I recall one guy that worked in Mason Music sayin' "...the next kid that comes in here playing 'Smoke On The Water' gets thrown out WITH the guitar"! ;)

I added RHCP's version of "Higher Ground" as something more recent that has been played ad nauseum in music stores.
It's all in good fun, of course.

I have no girlfriend...hence the original lonely phrase I guess. Haha, just kidding. I don't really want one at this point in my life anyway to be honest.

I'm listed in Alpha's latest newsletter from Dave as Sean Mullin. For some reason my email will no longer let me send out messages, but I'll send you something via Talkbass if you're interested in jamming, as for anyone else in the area.

Feel free to add me at my main music page as well: Link Removed

If you really want to turn heads, though, run through Marcus Miller's version... There's the initial grimace, followed by a "what the...?" look that I find priceless.

Also, gotta add Cliff's "Anesthesia" to the list, unless you can really play the whole shebang.
