Virginia Bassists

Thought I'd bump our Virginia Bassists thread and see what you guys are up to this Summer...

Here's where my Saturday gig was last weekend - the Rutledge Manor, in Dublin, Va. (Wedding Reception) Between sets, I roamed through the house and marveled at the antebellum architecture and woodwork.

Dublin! You always have to say "Dublin, Virginia" so no one gets confused about your whereabouts. ;)

I've got some private parties coming up in the DC-MD-NoVA area, but that's about it.

That's me too... this time of year it's wedding receptions, and house-concert parties, with a bar/restaurant gig every other Sunday until October.

Tonight was a background music set for a banquet in Blacksburg, tomorrow is another wedding in Roanoke, Sunday is a house party in nearby Fincastle. Home in my bed by 10:00 each night... all good! :D

Yeah... you kinda' have to know this place to even know about Dublin or Pearisburg. First gig I ever had there was subbing on upright in a Dixieland combo with a guy named Marvelous Marvin. I was a lost and desperate soul, and the bold pinstriped outfit... well, that didn't wear too well either. Fun music, just in way over my head at the time.

"Bold pinstripes" and "Pulaski County" are seldom mentioned in the same breath!

I haven't been to Dublin in ages, except for passing the exit on 81. I drove past Pearisburg recently on 460 and almost drove through town for nostalgia's sake, but I was in a hurry to get home from Kentucky. Old towns with lots of history and charm if you look hard enough.

Speaking of charming old towns... 3 cheers for Buena Vista, Virginia. Went to the Maury River Fiddlers Convention Thursday & Friday, then left for a gig in Charlottesville on Saturday evening.

That's Byoona (like Bjork, minus the ork, add the oona) Vista (like soul sistah) for all you Spanish speakers. Feel free to cringe. Next, we'll learn to pronounce "Botetourt," "Fauquier" "Poquoson" and many other words. o_O

LOL! The old folks there just call it "Byoonie" for short. :D It really is a quaint old mill town that somehow survived after the mill didn't.

On Botetourt... don't even try, unless you're from there. (I'm not originally, but grew up living there from 1979-1988. Went to Lord Botetourt High School, where they taught you to say it right on the first day of class. ;)

Good stuff, man. Good stuff. I went to college in the Shenandoah Valley and there are a few good ones up there, too: McGaheysville, Basye, Weyer's Cave...oh, and LOO-ray. And Staunton, but everybody but the girl in my office from Pasadena, California gets that one right!

further south, don't forget gloucester; most of the letters in the middle don't even get used!

Glad to see many Virginia bassists here, and seems that the musical scene is happily going on...Kudos...
I'm not in VA,... I'm across the globe, South East Asia, ..but I have my dear sister live in VA with her family. I wish I could visit them some time in the future. And when it's realized, I wish I can meet you guys and watch & listen to your music... :)

Played a gig on the Franklin County side of Smith Mountain Lake Wednesday night. It was a private party held on an amazing 2-story boat dock. Had this sunset as our backdrop. I sneaked a shot of (one of) my favorite basses against the horizon.
