Are there any Vista users out there that are using their PC's for recording and not getting problems? I know Vista SP1 is supposed to fix a lot of issues.

I have a computer that unfortunately has Vista, I've had it for about 8 months now and have not purchased any recording software/hardware because I read the horror stories.

Is anybody recording on Vista? If so post which software/hardware you're using.

I'm looking into using Reaper and an M-Audio Fast Track USB. I also want to use Dimension Pro.

I can tell you that I made a stink at the store and they wiped Vista off my laptop for free and installed XP free of charge after I could not even install Cubase let alone use it...

I don't do any pro recording with my PC but for goofing around Audactiy runs fine with Vista. Vista killed off some old programs. People have to get over it. It runs great and takes a few nice cues from Linux. That being said, we still use XP at work since we use old programs.

I don't agree that people need to get over it. Microsoft screwed the pooch royally and should be fixing it. What do I do about the programs I purchased four years ago that I still need to use daily that are not Vista compatible? (I'm a researcher and have a number of social statistical software packages that I cannot purchase again and need to use daily). Microsoft has no excuse, they should have made Vista entirely backwards compatible...

My 2 cents...

Agreed. They not only made software, but many peripherals (like my USB DAW interface) inoperable as a result. Hence my "downgrade"....why the hell should I have to invest in new hardware because no one can be bothered to write compatible asio drivers? I certainly cannot write one, and asio4all doesn't work.

Vista has been out for almost 2 years. At this point I blame it on the vendors of your third party software (or hardware) if it isn't compatible. There was a need for increased security and with that some change came about.

The press created a witch hunt and people that have never even used Vista say its bad.

BTW, I mainly use Ubuntu at home (because I like the fact that it is free and always changing), so it isn't like I'm a Microsoft fanboy.

My 2 centavos.

Personally I blame the vendor who sold you the computer with Vista on it.

Think about it, why would a reputable audio hardware/software vendor even WANT their product to "work" on Vista? Would you really want people to associate Vista's crappy performance problems with your products? Because even if you make your hardware/software work on Vista, it will never, ever, run as fast or stable as XP or Mac.

Personally I paid a huge premium to get a quality laptop with XP on it, and all my audio stuff works flawlessly. If you went cheap, got Vista, and it doesn't work, yell at Dell/whoever or be smarter about what you buy next time. Vista has been garbage since day 1 and nothing has changed. Don't buy garbage.

You sound like you never used Vista. It runs great with my 2 year old PC (with 2 gigs of RAM and was a Dell $599 special at the time I bought it meaning no duo core etc). It is much more stable than XP Pro too from my experience.

My PC that I am using it on came with XP. I installed Vista on my own as I get it through Technet.

Maybe next time you should gain experience but what you encounter in the real world vs. what you read on the internet???

Not sure who that was directed at, but thats exactly why I purchased the computer - the deal was great.
Are you using your computer with Vista to do any recording though? I didn't mean for this to turn into a "Vista sucks thread". Although it was bound to happen.

I run Windows Vista with a Digidesign Mbox2 Mini and ProTools LE. It works great and Digidesign ( albeit a little slow ) upgraded the PT software to run on Vista. They do a pretty good job of keeping up with the times IMO.

ProTools like Microsoft seems to get a bad rap. It's not like older Apple software runs on OSX without running in a different mode. I think the vedors more so than Microsoft should be blamed for not investing in development with newer technologies.

To be fair most of the people who have been happy with Vista for recording so far have been either using freeware or a pretty basic setup. I run xp in my studio, but I have alot more to deal with than anyone whos posted their actual studio here. Lots of plugins, lots of hardware, blah blah. Ive used vista enough times to not really care either way. My issue is, I cannot afford for my studio to go down at all really. Why make the switch when what I have works. Most of the people on this website have what Id call composer studios. An mbox is great for getting ideas down, but you wouldnt record a full band with it. Ask around at gearslutz.com and youll get a better consensus if its workable or not. The issue for me is Id have to spend money to figure out if its workable or not, and why would I do that?

i'm running cubase SE3 and and line 6 gearbox/toneport on vista with no problems. initially, i had big problems, mostly with installation.

one problem was with the gearbox package. i bouht it from MF a couple weeks ago, but the one i got was a version of gearbox that was more than a year old (and not vista compatible). i was able to download the current version from the line 6 web-site at no additional cost and that runs fine.

cubase was also a hassle to install - required an additional download to make the security key functional.

just to install these two programs on vista took me an entire day. getting it all up and running took another entire day.

now, everything seems to work fine, as far as i can tell.
