Double Bass Vivaldi cello Concerto no.5 (E minor)

Greetings!

Right now I'm working on Vivaldi cello Concerto no. 5 and I have questions regarding interpretation:

* I'm playing the Allegro (Con spirito) and the Largo (Alla Siciliana).. how fast should I take the allegro? The largo? (In other words, what MM is generally acceptable?

Assuming you mean the 5th Sonata:
Largo - 8th note = 80ish
Allegro - quarter = 100ish

I figured that quarter=120 would be WAY too fast (though I've heard some recordings going that fast).

There's no set tempo for "allegro", it just means fast which is a relative term. Unless the composer has put an actual metronome marking, it's all a matter of interpretation and taste. As Tyler said, he's heard it faster, and I've heard it slower.

But all I was saying is theres a general range(which is put on most metronomes) that is considered allegro, but do whatever you feel.

It seems at times that what the metronome indicates for "Allegro" can be uncomfortable for the player in some cases... It'd be crazy playing the allegro of this piece at 120 (for me at least-- Im just graduating high school with 6 months of lessons).. An allegro at 100 (as posted before) is plenty of a contrast for me and the listener

Yeah, but the metronome was patented in 1816 and Vivaldi died in 1741, so I guess he couldn't have known that.
