Dude, look right above you at the post where I explain where the OP's $500 price likely came from. But I appreciate your condescension. Just because you can buy the bass nearly everywhere for $299 doesn't eliminate the fact that every single one of those places also lists an MSRP of $499 because that's likely what Squier(Fender) requires of them. But keep living with your hyperbole in order to make irrelevant points. Just because YOU believe it, doesn't necessarily make it true.

The Fender and Squier web sites both listed retail prices (MSRP) a couple of years ago. Then two or so years ago the Fender site switched to listing the street price (MAP) which just confused the heck out of TB members who suddenly thought that Fender no longer allowed retailers to sell at discounted prices. Now the street prices themselves did not change, it was just that you could no longer get a lower price than you found on the Fender web site. This all seemed like a fairly ho-hum change to me whose only real consequences were helpful rather than hurtful but many here were truly confused by the move and needlessly offended by it. Recently the Squier website has made the same move to street pricing. Now, any retailer can charge as much or as little as they like. Those who charge over the street price will get few customers and those who charge under the street price are not allowed to advertise those prices. But the new Fender/Squier web pricing is helpful for the savvy consumer. You know that you should never have to pay over the website price if you look hard enough (and generally that is not very hard at all!) and if you do see a price lower than that, you know you are getting a true bargain. Back when I bought my Squier VI all we had for a price from Fender was the MSRP. I paid my local shop $20 less than the price most everyone here reported getting which was the only way we could know what the MAP was back then. Now that I can see the MAP online I know that I did get a bargain. Not a huge one but it did help pay for a custom set of LaBella strings for the beast!

I just finished meeting with him. He was astounded and embarrassed. I trust him as he is an older gentleman that I believe became confused with his catalogue and the revised way Squier lists their prices. He called Fender directly and admitted to me he had been doing it wrong all year long and no one had told him any different. He said "man I'm glad you came in and told me".

The good news is I ordered the candy apple red in a four and a natural in a five from him and he is going to let me play this one until the other two come in.

TWICE? When was the last time you saw a new MIA for only TWICE the price of the most equivalent Squier?

Sounds like you have a great local shop - and a couple of great basses winging their way to you! I very nearly went for the candy apple red, but the Olympic white was just too stunning to resist! I bought my new Vintage Modified on Sunday and weep with joy whenever I see it on the stand. I've wanted a Jazz since I was 16 - and it's worth the wait!

:laugh:I honestly believe he was making a reference to an old Sesame Street song. I remember it playing in our home many, many years ago when I was raising my kids. If not, I am only wrong.....:)

I know he was - but he should have put TWO pictures of squires up and one Squier (or, even better 3 and 1 like Sesame St.)
I just wanted to correct the person who was correcting someone.
'One must avoid inaccuracy when practicing pedantry.' (No one ever actually said that, but it's a good rule).

I have the exact same bass - I've upgraded the pickups to Dimarzio Ultra jazz and upgraded the wiring to something more robust . Plays great/ sounds better. I bought it with the intention of being a backup to my vintage Lado but now it seems to be the one I turn to more and more when playing live.

Don't care about comparing. I bought a Squier VM J V this summer.
It is a very good bass and sound very good. I also have a 2007 MIA J. I bought the Squier so I would have a 5er.
If I wanted to play a 5er all the time, this would do nicely.
I mostly play my 2012 P Select, but the MIA sees a little action. The Squier is just for when I want/need a 5er.

Excellent news. It sounds like the guy wasn't really trying to burn you, but was just clueless.
It also seems like it's a place you might want to do more business with in the future.

And wow - now you get to have two NBD's, when they come in - LOL
Good work. Looking forward to the pics.

Guess what! I called him after I left and got to thinking about it and got the 5 in the Olympic white. Plus my buddy wanted the natural so it was an easy concession. Candy Apple Red 4 String and Olympic White 5 String

Thanks man. Yeah, he's a nice older guy and he was mortified by his mistake. I think it nearly ruined his day. He's def a guy I'll do business with.

Oh man, I'm so jealous! They're both stunning, and as a pair they'll look amazing! I still haven't taken the plastic covering off the pickguard and pick-ups as I'm still a little precious of it, haha! Give us pictures when they arrive!

Edit: Whoops I just saw how big my previous image was... sorry guys!
