Luckily I jumped on my recent Mk III acquisition at the right time

I nearly made the move for your Mk3, but I didn't really want the gold hardware or LED's, figured I have the rest of my life to get one, might as well wait it out. I really like the look of the gold hardware, but I think it tarnishes fairly easily and I don't really wanna have to worry about wiping it down and polishing it, I dunno.

Just another pic of my MkI with it's 'new/old' fretless neck.
This thing sounds soooo killer! It was originally a fretless bass, but after years of use and abuse the original neck was deemed needing either a new fingerboard if was to continue fretless life -or- to be converted to fretted. So at the time it being my only Wal, I had it fretted. First jam rehersal was last weekend and boys in the band just loved the sound.

Was originally padauk w/unlined fretless, very similar to Jkernodle's bass up top, but without the center stripe (sap line), except very attrocious very beat!

AFAIK all current Wals only come with a mahogany core or solid mahogany if its painted.

It's a custom bass, I'm not too worried.

Wow! And 2 with blocked necks. That's uncommon as well. So is the concensus from those who have actually communicated with Paul that he only now offers the options listed on the web site?

No maple fretboards, no custom inlays, only mahogany core?

I think he'll still do block inlays. and I'm surprised he won't do other cores. there's a couple basses in the gallery with other core materials including a sycamore and ash core bass.

At that price, I can't see it selling. That's a £2000 to £2300 bass in my opinion.

it'll sit there like the one's on thebassgallery and bassdirect. They all appear to have some type of player wear to it. The one on bassdirect IMO is a bit more reasonably priced. I can't remember exact prices, but a couple wenge Mk I's for the past couple months have been offered and sold for quite less.

Yea. I'm really loving these basses. I spent some time on the fretted this morning. Playing through the patient by tool. They really designed something when they made these. The smooth bass response. Finally heard the pick attack this morning using a pick. I kept thinking it would bring out the mwah on the fretless it didn't. Makes me want to sell or donate every other bass I own.

Have any of you ever owned wenge? How durable is it? The luthier databases say it can be brittle. Is that just for the wood worker? It is definitely a classy wood like someone mentioned earlier.

Yep...it's a custom bass with a list of specific options that you can choose from. An ash core isn't one of them unfortunately.

Forgot you had that BE, I bet it sounds great. No neck stripes on it, not sure I've ever seen that before. You need to put up some more youtube videos with the new basses.

Yea the stripes are there, the headstock was laminated with BE. Yes i have to do some vids soon. My pedalboard is currently in peices and hopefully will have my soldering done next week.

I had an early MK1 with wenge facings a while ago. The facings on mine seemed a little closer to "quartersawn" than some, so it had more noticeable striped-looking grain rather than being uniformly dark like many wenge Wals I've seen.

I didn't have any issues with brittleness or cracking. The only thing I saw was that the wenge grain has softer and harder layers, and the slap wear on the front was slightly "ridged", with the softer layers wearing a bit more easily in between the harder layers of the grain. Aside from that, it didn't seem any more or less durable than the other Wals I've had.

You can check and see if the trim pot for the pick attack is set too low. The trim adjustment is in the control cavity.

Makes me want to sell or donate every other bass I own.

I used to have a big collection of Musicmans; 11-12 all at once. Now, I only have two.
