I believe you are correct - I just had Paul spec out a full gloss poly & it is more than the "standard"... & I have seen quite a few pictures of Wal's with cracks in the finish on the back of the headstock...

Guys -- I MAY have the opportunity to pick up a WAL Mk 2 direct from the shop in the UK during a business trip I have there the last 2 weeks of Sept. They have one in production that does not appear to be claimed or maybe the buyer backed-out, not sure.
Is there any tax advantage to getting her in the UK and bringing it home as luggage on the plane? Or am I better of to have her shipped? Thanks...

The best and cheapest way is to arrange with your airline to bring the bass on as "carry on"
They have done this for me twice, and just stowed it somewhere in the galley.
Also if your lucky and Paul doesn't have a problem writing you a second receipt for "maintenance" and "refinishing" for say $500, if they nab you for tax in customs on your way back u will pay it on the $500 and not $5000
If u explain nicely to the airline that this is your "baby" and if it didn't survive below you would be devastated.....worked for me!

It is not easy to find used Wal priced below price of new, specially for 80's/90s Wals in good conditions.
IMO only the last decade Wals are somehow less sought after due to manufacturing quality drops, what was again improved in the last few years..
You might consider removing the neck from the body & packing them into your carry on luggage - you could check the case & fill it with clothing...
I need to get my Wal home from the UK & it's the best I've come up with so far - I'm not too hopeful that the full case would be allowed in the cabin & airlines aren't too good at reimbursing you for damage done to checked musical instruments... I also looked into UPS & the rates that I've been quoted are pretty steep...
The only tax advantage: you could get any VAT refunded with the proper paperwork from the retailer & a visit to the appropriate desk @ the airport... No way around paying import duties & taxes when you arrive home, unless you're planning to break the law, risk getting caught & possibly have your name flagged for future air travel...
I'm definitely open to more suggestions - courier info or otherwise...

Also there isnt a "passable" carry on that would hold the body of a Wal (unless its a soft bag), nevermind the neck. Nor will the neck off the bass fit into a checked bag, unless its a soft bag as well, then your taking a risk anyways.
If YOU think that you are going to get "flagged" for improperly declaring goods....then just go legit and pay $1,230 VAT that you may or may not get back....Then your import/declaration taxes when you arrive home....which will be about another $1,200 (according to what Barry B paid)
So depending on your build options a new MKII into N.A your looking at about $8,600-$9,200 if you dont get the VAT back....sounds like fun!

Get VAT back on UK border (means put stamp and go to refund desk). It is easy, my girl did it and she is not extremelly smart to start with.
Don't report on entry in US. Put it on shoulder as your working instrument from world tour. Noone will ask and furthermore noone will dig so deep. Except in 0,000001% badly ill-fated cases.
Other route is to pay 2000k+ to two of more corrupted governments in the western world.
Just look at today situation on stock exchanges and conclusion might become easy. You are just 'small bass player in big world full of dirty tricks'.
Yes, Wal is well worth some pain.
Different rules here prevent you from just "putting the bass on your shoulder"
You can definitely expect questions...
First off going either from the US to Canada or vise-versa is that you have to have an equipment manifest on your person when crossing the border. Which means the make, origin of manufacturer, all serial #'s and the value.
In doing so when you cross back and they say hey....we think you bought that when visiting the country and now we are going to charge you taxes on it.
This proves that you already had the instrument/pedal/cabinet when you crossed initially. If you dont have proof they could charge you the appropriate taxes on the value of item(s)...and it doesnt matter if you have owned it for 5 days or 5 decades.
Now if you are flying over seas and have a "legit" second receipt (if the retailer is a nice guy) saying that you had the instrument "re-finished" they arent going to assume that you didnt mail the bass over first 2months earlier. To them you have a proper receipt and a legit reason to bringing it home with you.....and not have to pay import taxes on the value of the bass....rather the taxes on the service you had performed on the bass.....pretty easy

I think (maybe a local an advise) that in the UK, published or "advertised" prices must be inclusive of VAT (by law)... I'm not sure if Paul quotes prices to international customers with or without it - but 20% of the cost is worth investigating & getting back...
My Wal was acquired pre-owned & from a private sale in the UK - no VAT was charged - so I'm still hoping to bring it back in the cabin, in my carry-on & claim it when I arrive (here it's 13% HST & I believe 6% duty)... I don't know it's actual dimensions yet, it's an MKII - I'll have to do some calculations & hopefully it will squeeze into acceptable dimensions for business class carry on... (you can get away with a little more stuff in executive class)...
My only other options are - check it (hoping the Hiscox case can withstand the rigours of air travel) & claim it upon arrival...
or
Courier - but the quotes I've gotten so far are in the $700 & up range (via UPS) - there's got to be a more economical & reliable service out there... & do the customs paperwork when it arrives...

Its nice to hear another Wal will be on Canadian soil. (not enough of them here). I have a MKII as well and i pulled out about 6 different types of full size luggage bags and the neck (off) wouldnt fit in any of them. (these were newer and old school styles of luggage) If it was me, i would try everything NOT to take the neck off the bass and keep in its hard case.
I havent paid taxes in a long time at duty, but im pretty sure they can only charge you one of the taxes and a duty tax.
Also i believe UK is part of the MFN (Most-Favoured-Nation) Tariff Countries, so you will probably pay a MFN Tariff..... and on guitars it is listed as 6% (im not sure if you will pay this in addition to duty or not)

I had been looking for a nice condition flyer for a long time. Most I saw were mailers that were folded up to stuff in envelopes, but I just received a perfectly flat unmailed one. I recently bought an empty dogbone fiberglass Mk I case from a guy, and when it arrived it was stuffed with a couple of nice flyers (and the Percy Jones '79 Pro-Bass ad), and many old magazine product reviews on Wals from the 80's.

Thanks TMB - I just finalized everything last week & I'm hoping to bring it home by Christmas... It's staying with friends in the UK for now... It's a 1991 MKII & has a few dings in the poly (nothing too deep or into the wood), hard to tell from the very bad pic (I'll take some decent shots when it's here) but the facings are Maple (with a bit of flame)...
I think my new plan might be to have the neck & body shipped separately to save on the "cubed" shipping weight charge...
