Question for you guys...love my 84 MKI i got a couple of months ago but started wondering about the Pro Basses. Im not getting rid of the MKI (unless I would get another of course) but I thought it would be cool to have a Wal with a more traditional preamp (boost/cut rather than a filter) For you guys with experience with both, how does a Pro Bass compare in sound? I know they are rare on the used market and financially Im not getting one in the near future, I was just wondering.

Pro is definitely a different sound tho still Wal... here's a video of part of a talk I did about Wals a year or so ago. I run through the Pro sounds... hope it helps...

PS the Pro tone controls aren't Boost/Cut like a modern centre detented two or three band active circuit. The tone for each pickup acts much more (for me) like a classic passive tone, esp when compared to the Custom series tones. However, you get the active boost/cut from the togggle switches. The Pro to me still has that Wal tone to it (from the pickups, I guess) but has a more old school vibe 70s rock tone to it.

After regretting selling my (Mike Z's) 1998 Mk3 a while back, I'm finally back in the club. I picked up a really nice 2000 Mk3 5-string from a great TB'er.
My concerns are:

• While I'll do ok with a 5, I'm much more comfortable on a 4.
• This is pretty light for a 5-string Wal ( just under 9 1/2 lbs), but after back surgery, I prefer lighter basses.

I'll adjust as necessary and be very happy just having a Wal again, but what do you guys think my chances of finding a trade here for a <9lb 4-string Mk3 if I didn't adjust as well as hoped?

Berklee46, the 4 string Mk3 is the hardest one to find used, so I think your chances are nil on finding a trade.
You should just email Paul and see if his demo Mk3 has been sold yet, or just order what you need.

It's a good day for Boston-area Wal owners, obviously. I think I will find myself getting quite used to this beautiful 5-string.
Now I'm really questioning why I ever let my Wal go years ago...

I'll be spending some serious time with this bass tonight and relearning the tone settings, etc.

If anyone has any favorite settings that they want to share, I'd appreciate it.

i so regret selling my MK1... to get it back I'd have to spend a thousand € more. I wanted a MK2 though, but not a single one was up for grabs yet in my area.
