On that note... I cannot believe I just let one of the kids go. The Queen, which was my lovely very early maple Mk2 5 string is now the love of someone else. 
I like to think I have a few irons in the fire, and can't keep them all. What I will say is that was the fastest 20 minute Wal sale I had. A local friend bought it...he was in his car and driving over before I could finish saying Wal.

ya with necks, Paul is very particular in what he's willing to do outside the norm. I think the only substitutions you could do would be on the stringers, which are typically mahogany (could switch out to ebony or purpleheart from what i seen)....substituting the rock maple for any other maple, especially with bird's eye i highly doubt he would consider..... seeing how he also won't allow maple fretboards as well.

It seems most of the ones that pop up are schedua. That 87 schedua sold for 5000 a little while back then it sold again for 5500 pretty soon after. I'm surprised that nobody has grabbed that black one in the classifieds. It's a little dinged up but I feel like it's been there forever and he's dropped the price to 4999 now.
i've been following Wal prices for years now....but ya, the "trend" for fretted Mk1 currently gone up a bit so its more like $5500-5800, with oddballs being slightly more.

The black Mk2 5 string with natural neck is still available on basschat. But I think the guy still wants local pickup.

Well, as expected Paul will not build with Birdseye Maple as an option for neck construction.
"Regarding the the birdseye maple neck you mentioned in you last email – birdseye is beautiful and we do try to use this or a similar decorative maple for the headstock ears on our necks as a detail but for the main construction of our necks we prefer to use straight, consistent, close grained maple to ensure to stability and even flexing. Over the years I have seen a variety of makes of guitars and basses that look great but have not functioned well and stood the test of time. For this reason we don't offer this as an option."
Although I did mention the reinforcement I have on my order this did not sway him. All is well. Hope this helps others.

That zebrano lefty Wal used to be mine. I unfortunately moved it years ago. I got it from Steve Chesney who used to own a LOT of lefty Wal basses. The maple board actually sounded really good on this bass. I prefer the ebony MK II I had but maple / zebrano was a good match.

LOL - I was half-way through the post, jaw dropped (thinking *** - I thought this guy LIKED Wals - and THAT'S not true!) before I wised up and remembered that sarcasm can be an art. Well played, my friend, well played.
It practically hard wired into us Brits... especially in the context of humour...
...we always do that halfway between a sigh and a groan, eye-roll thing when we see film stars from other countries being interviewed and they make a very mildly sarcastic joke about the director and then do the "...no, I'm joking. They were wonderful." thing. Coz we're thinking, "Yeeeeeeees, we'd spotted that... stop worrying." Watch a Brit film star who makes the very same joke and they won't say "I'm joking". They'll pause, look thoughtful and add in the most serious tone they can muster, "...but the very worst thing was the constant fatulence!" before dissolving into laughter.
