Imo asking to get paid for rehearsal for a local band is nice way of saying he’s not really that interested in the gig.

I know I've been interested in the gigs where that was part of my comp package so I think you're wrong. I think he did what he appeared to do... showed up and proved he was serious about his craft. I doubt there was a negative.

It was also likely a negotiation. Some people don't know how that works.

Around here you basically get one rehearsal for free for a paid gig. If you need more rehearsals for your project you'll need to figure out some type of compensation

And everybody has a right to set their price. BLs discuss prices privately per musician. Just because you're 'in a band' doesn't mean everyone should get equal share.

Yeah, this is just a start up Killers cover band. Everyone is super talented so I can’t imagine this not turning into something successful in the future. I have been in some very successful bands that have opened up for major acts in arenas around the valley of the sun many times, so I would consider myself more than just your average weekend warrior. Maybe when I was doing this, I should have asked for this compensation LOL. Not trying to step on any Pro’s toes here, more like asking if this was normal to ask for practice compensation; that CLEARLY has been stated as something normal. Being that I am in the local scene here, if he was THAT much of a Pro, I think I would have heard of him, of which I have not...... I guess it never hurts to ask.

Hey all. I have been playing steady in the PHX area since ‘98, so it’s saying something when I say that this is a new one for me. I joined this “ Killers “ tribute band and we have been auditioning drummers for the last month or so. Had a drummer audition last Sunday, dude came prepared and pretty much nailed everything. Had a great conversation with him afterwords and he really liked what we were doing and wanted to be part of it. Sent him on his way and we all agreed that we should continue on with him, BL said he would call him the next day to offer him the position. Got a call from the BL the next day after he talked to this guy and he said the drummer had some “ conditions “. Come to find out, playing drums is all he does for making money and his “ conditions “ are, he wants a minimum of $150 a gig and expects to be payed $75 per practice for gas money. Like stated earlier, I have doing this a loooong time, been in many high/low profile bands and I have never heard of or expected to be payed for practicing! Many of my projects required a travel time of 45-60min and I never once felt like I should be payed to travel for practice, The $150 a gig is another thing that annoyed me, if we do not make $150 per member at a gig, tough ***** dude, we all take the time and effort per gig, and we all deserve an equal share. I expressed my concerns with BL and after a long conversation, he kind of agreed. The BL thinks that drummer is just trying to see what he can get out of us and is going to call him and express our concerns over his “ conditions “, basically calling his bluff. I think that drummer was good, but not that good. Have any of you guys/gals heard or experience this??

Let’s hear it for right to work. It’s called union scale. Union players get paid for rehearsals as well gigs at a guaranteed rate. We hire union horn players from time to time and frankly, that’s about the going rate.

You and the drummer don't overlap in expectations, just keep looking. If he's a real pro, he'll find something that meets his expectations and you will find a drummer that matches up with your expectations.

To get serious for a moment, I think a lot of this depends on the level of talent that's needed. Good guitar players might be a dime a dozen where you live, maybe good drummers are not so much.

Honestly, I play with pro level players and they don't seek a dime for rehearsal, but that's because the market here wouldn't bear it. For many players it comes down to whether you want to play or sit at home. I'm not saying that's how it should be, but that is how it is where I live.

It happens because most bands are meritocracies, not communes.

Man talk about a kill joy and loss of camaraderie. I’m no pro. But I do love music. I love being part of the sum. I’m glad I’m not a pro and start to think less of others and what they contribute.
I sing lead vocals, guitar, do all PA, load in and load out. Book and collect. I split equal and have no problem with it. Can’t imagine thinking I’m a bigger piece of what people enjoy.

This has little or nothing to do with thinking less of others. It has much to do with being let down by others, and the reputational consequences for oneself as a result.

Have one long practice and pay him his silly $75 fee and then tell him he had better nail it at the first gig or he's canned. Practice without him a few times just to get it straight and you should be fine. Sorry, but he sounds like a real jerk.

Right, which was my point. Why did he think this was a pro level thing to begin with? Is he just that daft, or was he lied to?

I mean, seriously. A guy who has those expectations surely isn't answering every ad on Craigslist for a drummer. Something must have reeled him in. What was it?
