Warmoth 72 P build..Anyone??

I believe they all have the same perimeter shape, it is just the contours and edge radius that vary. Warmoth mentions it on their site. I believe the 72 is similar to the 54 but with a different control route.

Anybody know if the 72P look is a Warmoth exclusive? Did Fender ever do a PG shape like this? I don't like the looks of a normal P bass, but LOVE the 72 Warmoth. Also curious if the body is any different or if its just the PG shape.

yes, fender made that pickguard on their telecaster basses released in the 70's. i think they have a modern player tele bass right now that uses it

Ahhh, the new tele-bass does have something like it. I was thinking the old tele-basses used a chrome control plate though (like a tele guitar).

Wow. View attachment 531087 Gorgeous. I take it you like the Babicz bridges? How would you compare their sound to other modern high-mass bridges?

I do like Babicz bridges a lot. Have not done much in the way of A/B comparisons. The design does what it says in terms of increased string to body contact, but how audible the difference is or is not is debatable. I also like the one screw adjustment and the looks. Jeff Babicz has also been very generous in donating bridges to our charity projects and I always try to be good to our sponsors when buying parts or other gear for myself.

Great-looking bass! But, my friend, that is 2 switches and 4 knobs too many for a P-bass! :p

The guy I sold it to took out the preamp I think even though there was a bypass switch on it.

I year or two later I built another one. By far my favorite P bass look.

For what it's worth, I could actually see myself going with active electronics in a P-Bass. I would think something like a Volume/Treble/Bass layout, with the Treble knob being push/pull active/passive-- that would give me some versatility while keeping the layout sufficiently "P-bass" clean and minimalist.

I'm also curious to see what one of these would look like with a single Delano P-bass pickup (with the large MusicMan-style poles) in the Stingray pickup position...

I am building a Warmoth 72 PJ now. I am doing the nitro myself (first time), looking good but I will not really know until i do the final wet sand and polish next week (in that last cure waiting 2+ weeks). I have literally 14 coats of clear on this thing so I hope it will be OK. I did make the mistake of (testing the fit) of the Fralin PJ PUP set I just recieved, and they do fit - snugly. Unfortunately when I pulled them out a little chip of paint came off the edge of the route :-(. I touched it up and I hope it will be ok. Will be Fiesta red with Roasted maple Jazz neck with Drop D Extender, Pearloid Pickguard, Cream/white pickups and knobs, and Babicz Bridge. Cant wait till its done, some Pics...
A few pics so far.

Just finished! After a million coats of stuff and curing time, my first Nitro job is done. Today was sanding and polishing day. I also completed the bass final build.

This is what I did:
  • Warmoth 72 PJ bass in Swamp ash that I finished in Fiesta Red
  • Warmoth 72 Tort Pickguard
  • Fender Roasted Maple Neck
  • Frailin Pickups - Creme
  • Babicz Bridge
  • Hipshot/Fender tuners with Extender
  • Passive electronics - but with a 6 way Switch (Para, Series phase, etc) and a toen Push pull - In up position on 10 it is a mid boost, this basically cuts out the highs and low end. (Stingray sound).

See some Pics taken throughout the process...
