Funny story:
This is an alder body!
The Reverb listing identified this as a swamp ash body. Since the other details were accurate, I did’t trust my eyes until I dug out the ash body (free from a friend due to a router scar) that I used as a finish test swatch.
So, I need a finish that is suitable for a closed-grain wood like alder. I’ve been plotting a path forward intended to highlight open grain. That’s not going to work here.
