Lynn Ellsworth has been in the process of making a bass for me for well over two years. It's a Ric-inspired build with a mahogany body and zebra wood top. Lynn recommended a matte oil finish, but I just couldn't do it. I had to have a gloss finish to show off the wood and the bass. (Sonically, I don't believe it makes a significant difference, and I base that on the great tone I get from my current glossy-finished basses.) It's actually getting painted right now, so the end is in sight.

In the case of zebra wood I would have gone gloss all day long. It has a lot more contrast in the grain. I don’t think there’s much to say about tonal differences unless you pile on some massively thick coating. Being that this also will be without a pick guard I wanted to see if it would tone down my normal wear and tear areas. Since Warmoth uses satin poly and not nitro it’s supposed to be just as durable whether it has gloss or not. Also to remember it’s satin and not flat. There is still some sheen there.

Neck’s here. I’m hoping that a few days to settle will help, but at the moment it doesn’t seem like it will go into the body, it’s just slightly wider than the routed pocket. Thoughts?
Environmentally, it’s probably 10-15 degrees colder outside than in the house, and definitely far drier here in Vegas than in Washington, also a couple thousand feet higher in elevation, not that I’m sure elevation has much effect.

I really hope this settles down and fits in a few days to a week.

It looks like you have a gloss finish on the body. The finish builds up a few thousandths on the neck pocket. You may need to take a bit of sandpaper to the neck pocket to clean up the finish.

I used these little tools that were made to use on a Dremel tool, but I used them on a drill to route out the neck cavity on the white Jazz. The clear coating was real think on that maple neck.

Yeah, a little sanding and now it’s tight, but in a good way. Time to install strap buttons (strap lock buttons, to be precise), while I wait on the Gecko neck washers that I forgot to order before. No hurry though, it’ll be a couple months before I get the pickups.

Hey, could any Z bass or short scale Z bass owners tell me how they like playing the bass when seated? Kinda curious if the short stubby lower horn is comfy. And how well it balances the bass.

Yeah, it fits now. So back to waiting on parts.

Gecko neck washers
Bridge
Pickups
Pickup screws

still need to order:
Tuners
Strings
9V battery wiring
Gold screws for the truss rod cover
Knobs

And I have to figure out how I’m going to do some kind of spacer or bushing to deal with 1/4” threaded part of the pots going through 3/8 holes.

The Benson pups are one of the best kept secrets in TB if you ask me. Warm, punchy, and even.

I'm quite enjoying my first experience with tapewounds too!

when you ordered the body, did you request a certain weight? my warmoth precision body weighs 5lb 12.25oz. i thought it would be light because its poplar but they must have given me the heaviest piece of poplar they had.

You know, if you're thinking about routing for another pickup, you can route for two more pickups as another option. Just sayin'.

Almost done with my very first Warmoth build. Just strung it and went through setup and am playing it acoustic only for a bit to get to know it. It plays absolute amazingly! Falling more in love each day. Many details still to go but the bones are there. I'll start its own post once I'm done.
