Best way to tell is look at either end of the neck. This is quartersawn.

Lakland neck is what got my interest to do this project.

Update on the Lakland/Warmoth project,just got a call from luthier bass is finsihed. Got few pictures after all the mods. Not good at taking pictures,but am really liking what he did,and the pickups in place and the Audre 4 band preamp sounds awesome. Neck is nice,and action real low like I like. And will be taking it to mid week Church service tonight. It sounds real nice here at home,but acoustics will be different at Church. Have an SWR Redhead I use at Church. Was little nervous at first with the neck and body coming together or not. I think it turned out real nice.

I am in the middle of a turquoise dinky J bass with a roasted maple neck build and thinking of going no pickguard as well, like yours. I figure if I don't like it, I can always add it later.

The fact that the body is a Warmoth,I ordered a pearl white pickguard. It may not fit cause of the pickup sitting real close to the control plate? If you decide to go with pickguard,and mine don't fit I could offer it to you? Also mounting of the tapered neck on the Warmoth body,had some over hang at top of pocket on lower side of the body. Don't effect anything I can deal with the difference.

I used to own a Dinky Jazz body that I used for a project and at first I didn’t want a pickguard on it so I mounted the control plate without it like you did. There is some slop in where you can mount the control plate so when I later decided to mount the Warmoth Dinky J specific guard I found out it didn’t fit properly based on how I’d mounted the control plate. I had to mount the guard, then re-drill the holes for the control plate so it meshed properly.

For the future, I would recommend anyone doing a Jazz build to at least mount the guard with tape (if you aren’t sure you wanna drill it) and use it as a template (with the neck on, of course) to mount the control plate. Also remember the Warmoth guards and control plates match up, other brands don’t. I tried to use and old Squier VM control plate on a build and it didn’t mesh with a Warwick guard at all.

You might want to check Pick Guardian...they might be able to make one for you. I hate that Warmoth doesn't make pick guards for all of their body shapes and sizes. Good luck.

Well they have them for the dinky models at least, I don't know about the others, but the one coming should fit if I go with it. No pick guard on my dinky P in my avatar. Maybe there is a pattern developing here :D:D

Pickguard or no pickguard: When undecided, I have ground the heads off of pickgurad-screws and glued them into the screw holes on the pickguard. Throw a couple pieces of double sided museam-gel (completely removable and finish-safe) on the pickguard and, VOILA! Also great for quick and painless PG changes betwen sets.

I’m not sure if it’s the same with 4-string models, but the Warmoth Std Jazz 5 (MIM/Squier) PG’s have an option for “Fender control plate” or “Warmoth control plate”. But for the Deluxe J5 doesn’t have this option - only Warmoth plate.
I have a Std J5 PG on my Squier (as well as the Roasted J5 neck), which also happens to have a Fender MIA style control plate (with 3/8” holes) and they match up pretty well.

What I wasn’t expecting is that Warmoth beveled the control plate cut the same way the rest of the PG is bevelled. You can see it in the pic if you zoom in.

The neck is not wenge, I am sure. Probably ovangkol.

The body looks like bubinga. Just a guess on that.

You can look up the details on the Warwick site by punching in the ser. no.
