Warmoth project

so i have a standard fender precision bass, and i really think that a vintage jazz neck would look quite nice on it. can i do this by buying a warmoth neck and putting it on... they dont make p bass necks with the block inlay. is it ok to put a j neck on a p bass?

Warmoth makes good stuff, but doe to their brick s---house construction [a good thing], they might feel a little "chunky" if you're looking for a thin Jazz neck.

USACG and AllParts make "Jazz necks" a bit thinner, or "vintage".

I've been doing plenty of research for by own build and this is what I've come to understand, but I could be wrong.

I suppose some TBers with real expertise will weigh and and add to or subtract from what I've posted.

In other words, don't make any decisions based on this post.

Edit: There was a post i read yesterday that had a link to an ebay store that sells real Fender necks it seemed. I didn't understand how Fender would allow this. I'll try and dig it up for you.

J neck on a P body is a classic and yummy combination. I think you will be happy with the outcome! I can't vouch for the other companies mentioned, but I can vouch that Warmoth makes good stuff (never tried their jazz neck specifically, though). Be warned that the block inlays are kind of a pricey option :)

I think the ebay dealer you are thinking of is "Reliable Fender" and they part out real Fender basses, that is how they get the necks. They have cool stuff that probably costs about the same as a brand new Warmoth neck.

I guess if some entity starts a business by buying whole Fender basses to break down and sell the parts, Fender can't take legal action?

I've noticed Fender is rather aggressive when protecting their brand.

They are selling parts of basses that they already purchased. If they were selling aftermarket stuff and calling it Fender then Fender would have grounds for a lawsuit.

Can anyone comment on any potential change in tonal qualities as a result of putting the thinner neck on a P-bass?

I have a similar project in mind which also includes swapping out the pickups to Antiquity II's in order to have a nice (and not too expensive) P-bass that sounds like it's from the 60's but plays easier due to the jazz neck.
