Warning: Gear prices are about to jump up

if something like this is actually happening at Sweetwater, it's likely not due to any supposed supply chain apocalypse, but rather to help Sweetwater recover revenue losses on open box and return merchandise.

And again I have to ask of that poster: And you know this how?

Besides, promoting open deals box is nothing new. Sweetwater has reduced prices and specials on returned and open box merchandise all the time. As do all the other major retailers.

And FWIW, I’ve polled some of my music cronies, and neither they nor myself have received similar heads-up “buy now” messages from our respective reps.

Draw what conclusions you will.

True....I had a club owner try to haggle with me about our fee. He wanted to pay what he was paying bands 30 years ago. I politely asked if he was charging the same price for food and drinks as he was 30 years ago. We got the gig at our price.
I still hear some musicians say that they are getting paid to haul in their gear
Good luck with that. Where I live there are probably 20 or more bands vying for each show. And there are more than a few that are very good and bring people to the clubs. At some point, you price yourself out of the market.
They’ll get what they pay for and we’re worth what we will be asking. We will get it, or I’ll stay home, and seek out other venues. My time and skills are worth more than $100 for 7 hours work.

But one economist put it as succinctly as I could imagine. He said that basically nobody guessed how hard it would be to re-start the economy.

Which just shows why most economists are useless IRL. Anyone who thought that pressing a "pause" button on the world economy wouldn't have sheer disaster as a result had to be utterly ignorant or clinically insane.

We've seen nothing yet, BTW.

They're not useless. They're actively shilling for whichever group of extremely rich people finances their "think tank," "Institute," or major university economics department...or they're authoritarians justifying increased governmental control.

This shilling encompasses over 90% of modern "economics."

I'm not disagreeing with your observation.

Having said that, I've read a lot of related literature going back to Adam Smith and these folks have been mostly useless from Keynes on. IMO, that is.

People who actually have a clue about how stuff works - David Stockman comes to mind - have been screaming bloody murder over the past ~15 months but it all fell on deaf ears.

The proles will be proles.

There’s a global shortage of cargo shipping containers (try pricing one), and the chip/IC manufacturers cannot meet demands for electronics. The automobile manufacturing industry is already feeling the pressure from lack of computer components, and the effects have not yet made it to the streets really. Give it a few more months and those effects will start showing up everywhere. The only way around it is if unnamed countries throw an army of workers at it, and even then the outcome is questionable. Eventually things will come back on line, but I suspect the prices will never correct fully. Perhaps a silver lining from this might be a return to more analog things in everyday life, even if briefly in the grand scheme.

Wow, that's a name I haven't heard in a while...

I’m a 5 figure Sweetwater customer, easy. I didn’t get a price increase email either. Usually they send me an update when Sweetwater President Chuck Surack has a bowel movement.

I guess none of this price hike stuff applies to me. Bullet dodged!!

Usually they say “We’re number 1 AND number 2 today” or “Join us as we drop the kids off the pool and head to Gearfest 2021”.

There you go.

Now do what happens when labor costs increases?
A. Company eats cost.
B. Company raises prices of product.

You just made my point.

Thanks.
True. Revsound is owner operated and in the current situation probably a fortunate situation. My sheet goods costs went up 30%, pine almost 40%, hardware currently stable but I have enough on hand to hopefully get through this "bubble". I was at a local lumberyard last week and was querying regarding increase in sheet goods costs (and I do not purchase sheet goods from them). They had received video of massive stockpiling of plywood at Georgia Pacific facilities and yet prices had almost doubled for them. Piece of 4X8 Advantec sheathing for roofing use to be $28-30 now just sub $90. . Now perhaps not gouging, but probably, supply chain/trucking problems? Maybe. Either way it's all about the green. I had to initiate an increase on my line 6 months ago just do to utility costs and materials to keep the building open and run close to the bone. It certainly cannot be easy for the big names to deal with this. For once we're kind of in the same boat. I am not whining and happy every day to get up and go to the shop and head out and play again. I think this is going to be the greatest summer for musicians since the 70s. Everyone is getting out to see live music. All our recent shows have been packed with fans from 21-80 and they are partying! And, I like the new hours. Tonight is 6-9PM and the new norm is done by 10;30. I dig it. Lastly I am superlatively blessed that players are enjoying my cabinets. That's all I got to say about that. Hang on we're in for a ride for a while but we'll get through it. Sisu my grandfather use to say. Sisu is all you got to hang on. Good luck and best to all.
