NASA used to have a advanced propulsion lab where they locked alot of smart people in a room and let them blue sky stuff.

I felt kinda bad for mcglyph what with everyone piling on, but then I had a quick read of his latest posts over there and....well, good-natured as the p***-taking is, its pretty much deserved.

The only time you fight that hard for something is if you're invested in it or related to it. A casual interest wouldn't garner such a rabid, constant defense. I pushed buttons to see how far the membrane would stretch so that I could see what was behind it. Worked like a charm.
I do think he missed his calling. He is a master of saying a lot without saying anything.

it was an interesting read although I don't quite understand how if you are distorting space time the transition from here to there wouldn't be instantaneous, maybe I've just been playing too much mass effect.

The Alcubierre Drive is a nice workaround of that problem. You don't have to accelerate the ship at all. Just warp spacetime until you get there. Theoretically works but it's a hardcore pipe dream. The novelty in the article is that they've theoretically reduced the energy requirements to a feasible amount. The problem being moreso the exotic matter thing. Our brilliant plan is contingent on something that probably doesn't exist...
Well, not quite. It doesn't take any more energy to propel a spacecraft to the speed of light than it does a molecule. The problem is that in both cases the energy requirement is infinity. So, that's a minor problem.
