You know, I've gotta' try the soaps sometime. I really didn't get along with the J/MM config at all, but I LOVE what you call the "fatboy-jazz" (Bart X5) pickups! Of course Adam sounds fantastic on his six, which has soaps.
I just couldn't get the punch and focus I was getting from the X5's, and the tone was just not my thing after all. I'm really more into "generally J" type sound for the most part, but I do admit there are some dual soap configs I do very much like. BTW, this is not to suggest JD's J/MM is crap. I never got along with the MM/J in the Lakland basses, either. Just not my thing.

He's building me a MM-J now to replace the JJ one.....

Hopefully I can get some bite and growl out of that combo.....
I was on the fence about mm-j setup

I've got the MM/J and I love it. I miss the throatiness of a neck J pickup, but the MM/J in a mix just sits sooooo well. I've been curious about putting a coil splitter on the MM to get some of that neck J tone back, although it isn't close enough to the neck to be in true J position.
I get a lot of comments about my tone when we play live, and my rig is as clean and sterile as they come.
Any suggestions for the pre adjustment on my model 2 to get a little less growl? I see it has 2 knobs but im not sure what they do.
One is preamplifier output and one is "sparkle" ..... Hook it up to your amp an turn the pots until ya get what ya like.....
Ha. That's what got me in trouble. I started messing with it and I think I made a good thing worse :/ maybe ill try to have some more fun tonight.
In my case, the "solution" was to rip that crap out and rewire the preamp to the standard bart specification. Requires a 500K trim pot and a resistor (can't recall the value, but it's on the bart site). At least in my case, seemed to improve both punch and clarity.
IMHO, don't replace the preamp until you've at least tried the standard wired bart.
Agreed here...This is a cheap and pretty simple fix. See how you like it. That said, I have a Roscoe with Bart pickups and an OBP-3 preamp and I love it. But, I am with Vic...I would try the standard wiring on the Bart first. Warrior does some wacky stuff with their wiring and not everyone like the outcome.
I have no issues with the Aggie preamps, but keep in mind those barts in your Roscoe are custom. The pickups in the Warrior are not (not to mention also being a completely different type).

Last August I had some email exchanges with JD about that "sparkle" circuit he puts in his basses (which I hate, and removed, btw). He responded with some fairly useless generalized comments so I basically gave up and responded with a "ok thanks". That was August 3rd of last year. I just got an email response to that thread from him with simply:
"Hav a great weekend ......."

Vic... I didn't know about the "sparkle" circuit and I'm like you that I don't like the intense brightness. All three of my Warriors have that extreme brightness. So, can you detail how you remove the "sparkle" circuit? Thanks!!
Well, it's more than that. It changes the tone of the preamp to provide some kind of internal treble adjustment, but IMHO, it also chokes the sound of the bass in general. Easy. Just pull off both the trim and sparkle trim pots and the resistor they have, and replace the whole mess with a single trim pot and resistor per the standard wiring on the bart site. If that's beyond what you wanna' mess with, take it to any qualified tech and it should be a cheap/easy job.
