Warwick nut

So I just recently got me a used 1999 Warwick Corvette Standard 5 string. And the nut seems really cheap. This wasn't surprising because I had researched them prior to buying, but I'm considering replacing it in the future. One time while waxing I removed all strings except the G string, just to save me the hassle of pulling out my tuner later(it's in a gnx4 processor, don't have a stand alone tuner yet) and the bass side of the nut was sticking up, it went back to normal when I put the strings back on, but I don't think it should do that. If anyone knows what the problem is, please let me know. Aside from that, if I were to replace it later, what kind of nut should I get? Bone? Brass? I don't really know much about them, so some input would be appreciated.

I would just take your bass to a local luthier (there must be some good ones in MD) and have him make you a graphite nut. It's not a major procedure and the graphite will last forever (and won't sound quite as harsh as a brass nut). I really don't see the need for an adjustable nut.

+1 on no brass. Brass is a bit harsh for my taste. As far as needing an adjustable nut is up to you to decide. I liked it, but to each his own.

I had a JAN II on my Thumb BO that seemed week in the center. It bowed downward from the tension of the strings,...so much so that I used cardstock to wedge up underneath and relieve the bow. I contacted the distributer (Dana B Goods at the time nearly ten years ago) and they sent me a new "stronger" JAN II.

Recently I carelessly left my Thumbo leaning against a table and of course if fell and broke the nut like so,...

I could never get over how the Jan IIs had those two protrusions from where the clips went into place. Occasionally they would stab me if I got a little carried away in my motions. Also,...I've never once adjusted the nut the entire time I've owned this bass so I just went ahead and had a repair shop replace the broken Jan II with a bone nut.

I like the bone nut,...it's solid and comfortable. The whole JAN thing may be useful to some but to me it's just a selling point.

Thanks! I didn't know they had a new distributor. Also to the other posters thanks for the input on brass nuts, I was considering them but after hearing that they're harsh I changed my mind, in fact I'm planning to switch from ss lo riders to nickel to bring the harshness down.

thanks, I may also consider bone or graphite if not a JAN III. Did you notice any tonal difference?

I don't know if I 'buy' this whole "harsh" thing. The frets are brass & they don't sound "harsh", right? I have an old Warwick w/ the brass nut, and to me, it just sounds more consistent from fretted note to open string. Makes sense, right?

Hmm, interesting. I'll keep that in mind. A guitar playing friend of mine said that that it would definately sound different, but maybe it makes a bigger diff on guitar. Who knows
