after a few years with my warwick thumb bo 5 string that i really love i found out that the j pick up sound is kind of wearing out to my ears, im currently going tru ampeg pr series cabs x2 at 8 ohm, mesa boogie strategy 500 and peavey tb raxx preamp, i was looking into a mod, im thinking on installing humbucker pick ups, is it worth it?, im looking for a more modern sound, any one that has done a mod like this? i was looking to trade it with the mesa for a curbow intentional exotic petite but thats way of a long shot, i really like the feel, and look of this bass not so much the weight but i can deal with it, does any one have any opinion on this mod, if it hapens it will be done by a profesional at players guitars in Worth Il a few min of Chicago, any input will be great thanks

I wouldn't do it. That could potentially destroy the bass, and you might not hear that much of a difference, and now you would be stuck with a chopped up warwick. I would look at your amp/preamp situation first. Tube power usually has a vintage sound, and I'm not familiar with peavey preamps, but I would really start there before you do something irreversible.

I haven't put humbuckers in mine, but I think if you maybe looked at upgrading the preamp to something with a lower bass center frequency, somewhere below 100hz you might find you can get a wider more modern sound from it... I don't find the thumb 5string to be not modern sounding, it just has a certain tone because of the two backwards sloping J pickups, the 4 string with the more forward neck pickup is much more balanced sounding to my ear

thanks for the replys, ive seen the thumbs with a humbucker but that is in the broad necks, i remember my old tobias with barts on it and it was killer, it was a 18 volt tho, how would upgrading to this volt would affect the sound? and you are right chubfarm i would definatelly would hate it if the bass dont make much of a diference, what preamp would yous recomend, i look into the mec 18 volt 3 band eq as mine only has a 2 band eq, treble and bass, but they are expensive for a experiment, i might look into a bartolini or emg as they are the most common ones and afordable
