Was Bass your first instrument?

Tuba, so when my first Jr High band was formed guess what I "got" to play? (I was the only one that could really read the bass clef on the piano book of Supertramp's greatest hits.)

I had 4 years Piano lessons as a kid. I got a 6 string guitar at around 15 (or before... it was a long time ago) and taught myself. I bought a bass eventually because my dad was a Piano Tuner and could get me a Japanese made Bass at cost price.

From the same place I could have bought the original release of that Hagstrom 8 string bass... pity I didn't...

I took trombone in school from about 5th grade to the end of 8th grade.(When it started being "uncool" to lug that big case around on the bus.) Even learned how to read notation quite well,btw.



Wish I had never stopped.

I had a really good drum teacher in my teens and that's the only real training I had on an instrument. Switched to bass after high school I started having wrist problems.

Played bass in church growing up at times came pretty natural to me.

From a small town...started on bass and then due to lack of options in the town I am from became the singer. Couldn't sing and play at the same time and we had a friend that played bass so by default, since I was the only damn person that sing/scream I got voted into singing fairly reluctantly. After singing for years decided to pick up an old electric guitar I had laying around and started playing it. Now I've come full circle back to my first love, the bass Luckily playing guitar for quite a few years, it was fairly easy to pick the bass back up, but my right hand technique is crap right now.

I started on cello. Three and a half years on cello, then a year and a half on string bass, then dinked around on a guitar for a while. I picked up a bass guitar to play for the first time when I was 17, and never looked back.

I did take bagpipe lessons for a while in my 20's. I recently bought a sax, and I want to learn it also.

Played trumpet for eight years before picking up bass in the late 80s to pick up girls. I was young and playing trumpet in a jazz band right out of high school in 87. We'd played a thing in Shreveport and I was out having drinks with some friends when a girl ran up and asked if i was in "the band". I said yes and she squealed, kissed me and ran off. It was only after that I realized we were two doors down from a Metal club and with my youth and near waist length hair she thought I was in the headlining band, an early incarnation of Pantera. Well, that was it for me. No more Weather Report, Maynerd Ferguson and Brecker Bros. I bought a bass and yes, perhaps in retrospect sadly, sold my soul to the excess and often simple bass lines of the hair band 80's. Still, nobody ever threw panties at me when I played trumpet.... So was it worth it? HELL YEAH! Recently picked trumpet up again, bought an old student model. Once again though no one throws panties at me. Unless my wife wants me to do laundry.

I played cornet for about 5 years, when I started getting bored of it when I was around 16 I decided bass was the way to go given how much I loved metal.

I had 2 years of piano lessons when I was about 9. I was not a promising student,as I memorised what i was playing after the initial music reading,and always seemed to have an uneven left hand technique. I didn't pursue it after that till my mid teens,when i was very into the popular keyboard wizards of the day,(Emerson,Wakeman,Corea,Duke,Hammer). But they were way beyond my rudimentary capabilities. At the same time i was listening intently to the bass players in those bands,and really loving what they were doing with melodic injections,and found myself drawn to the instrument. I still have an Alesis Synth that i occasionally noodle around on,but bass became my calling.

Started at 13 on trombone. My brother played upright and trombone. When The Beatles hit Sullivan, I taught myself to play bass on the upright. Mom bought me my first electric a year later.

Started on acoustic guitar, then electric, bass soon after. It was a matter of jamming with friends and needing to switch back and forth. I have played guitar and bass both pretty consistently since. Played either in various bands. Until recently I considered myself a guitarist first but recently I've got the bass fever and have been focusing on it pretty heavily. Trying hard to get away from the "plays bass like a guitar player" thing. Along the way I have also done some keys, harp, drums, etc.

Bass was the first instrument I could play successfully, but I did have a go at learning drums and acoustic guitar first, but I couldn't get the hang of it, so I moved to bass. I can now play guitar and drums fine now haha

No, I played Trumpet first, than keyboards and now bass. After learning bass I have started to pickup blues guitar which is fun but bass is far superior.
