Was Electric Bass Your First Instrument?

piano, clarinet, guitar, saxophone, bass, drums. in that order.

piano was a great first instrument for me because my piano teacher was very theory-focused and i picked up a lot of great stuff that way. i still love playing all my instruments, except clarinet, which i dont have anymore. i would say theres something special about the bass, but then again theres something special about the others too...

i originally played drums but i just messed around with them. i decided i wanted to play something a little more seriously, so i thought about all of the instruments i had played and decided i liked the bass best. and i was right, i love the bass. for what it is worth i wish i had concurrently learned the trumpet or saxophone, as i also love these instruments but i am happy that after 26 years i am still spellbound with the sound of bass.

I started with a summer of bass lessons around middle school, but quit (rented equipment). A couple years later, I started taking guitar lessons and that went on for a while. In high school, the liturgical music group needed a bass player, so I picked it back up and kind of taught myself using what I was learning at my guitar lessons. Bass will always be my first instrument. The bass influence is really evident in my guitar playing, which accents and walks the bass lines and plays around with the rhythm. I am lucky now to have outlets for both; I play bass in a casual band and play guitar at church.

I played piano for a couple years when I was a young kid and then stopped. Then about 5 or 6 years later my friend bought a squier p-bass and I fell in love with it and decided to start playing and take lessons... now it's pretty much all I do...

Funny enough, bass is not my first instrument, but I switched over from drums rather than from guitar. I still play drums all the time, though.

I tarted ou on th Acoustic/classical guitar when i was in year 3, i played that for 3 years, after a gap of 5 years i started gaining an interest in instruments again but didn't want to do the usual guitar thing so i went for bass, never regretted it.

I often wish I had started on Piano first, I think it would have made things easier. But now I'm learning Piano next!

On another note, the Flute intrigues me, but I don't think I could learn it. I just like the sound and effect.

The first thing that stuck was the cello.

My first attempt was guitar at age 10. Couldn't barre an F chord. My brother told me that my fingers were too short and fat to play guitar.

Second instrument was drums, at 12. Still play occasionally, but haven't been serious about them since I was 15 or so.

Started learning bass at 12, and over the next three years, realized that I had found my calling in life! Almost 30 years later, still jammin'!

8th grade(1978)- friend of a friend needed a bass player to finish a band. I was antisocial(much like now )so my folks were glad to buy me a cheap bass to get me out of the house & *playing w/others*. Picked it up fairly quickly, & 30 years later, I still love the low tones. Never made much effort to learn another instrument(yet).

Started with bass and drums about the same time. First gigs were as a bassist, not counting the school band where I still played drums. Switched to lead when lead players were hard to come by, then back to bass. Still switch between all 3 and occasionally keys.

I took up playing bass about 2-3 years after that. I started playing guitar around 2-3 years after that.

Classical piano when I was a kid. Didn't remember ANYTHING from that time. Wasted information. Went to the bass then starting piano again. Both of my favorite sounds. Piano sounds like crystal notes and bass sounds like thunder.

Didn't pick up the bass 'till I was 15.

(Really regret giving up piano btw, but that's another story...)
