If you check that thread linked you'll find several mods and Paul himself posted about it. For what it's worth I think it's a fine idea that worked perfectly ok for me.

Based upon Paul's posts, it's real, but was delayed due to some bugs. And yeah, you will have to do it once every 30 days on each device you use. No biggie.

I feared it at first, because I've ranted before about hating inferior, inconvenient 2FA schemes, but this went quite smoothly (once I ditched Samsung's app in favor of Googles, but I knew that sigh).
