wasted on stage

let's just say i was under the influence of something other than alcohol on a Halloween gig a few years back and ended up smashing a pumpkin with a guitar into little itty bits. i've not traveled down that road since. but i do care to have 2-3 beers before a show, but once the show starts it's sip beer, sip water, sip beer, sip water...

Depends on your approach to the gig. If you're gigging to amaze people with your musical prowess, then prior intoxication probably isn't the best idea. But if you're going on stage to smash pumpkins and blow up speaker cabs, I can't see how a little hooch would hurt very much. Might even help to get into the spirit of things. (No pun intended). :)

I mostly have to drive to my gigs and don't want to be caught .05 by the police here ( Australian cops are VERY strict....and quite correctly) Did once walk to a gig and ended up drinking from a jug (pitcher). Was an excellent gig except the guitarist dropped something very illegal before we went on and the rest is history. No longer play with them
.....chemical recreation is NOT my thing....no sireeee

funny, but someone in the crowd said...You played good...but why did the guitarist play everything worng?

Hmmmmmm :bassist: :scowl:

Well I smoke the green, so Im usually under the influence to some degree. I havent played any gigs yet, but I can function just fine stoned or sober on my bass. I smoke too much so its a lot like being normal lol.

As for drunk, Ive tried to practice when drunk, that never works out well at all. Not just for me, but for everyone else thats drunk too. Then again, I dont like being drunk, so I rarely get to that point. I dont like playing with even a little alochol in me.

I imagine its similar for people that drink a lot to be able to function a little better when drunk than the average Joe, just like I can function just fine while smoking, because I do it too much and have adapted that as my norm.

Not very proud of any of this mind you, just chiming in with the experiences :)

I know it's probably been said, but for those of you who think you sound good drunk or high, you don't.

My sentiments exactly! I once heard a tape of myself playing a gig drunk. Key word: "once". Ever since then I won't touch that first beer until the beginning of the last set. I discovered I didn't really need alcohol to deal with "nerves" before the show.

I have never performed while under the influence... even when there were band situations that came pretty close to driving me to drink.

I've got a few horror stories of bandmates playing under the influence. In my first semi-pro band, we changed keyboardists in midstream, from a really talented, charismatic and friendly guy that had left us only to form his own project, to an older cat who listened to jazz fusion and spent loads of time making his own smooth jazz/new age recordings on his four-track. (And he'd carry copies of these tapes with him and listen to them in his car!!) This older cat quickly developed a way of half-assing through songs - many was the time that he would smoke some mota before the gig, remember very little about the songs other than some of the keyboard intros and whatever key the rest of the songs were in, and pretend he was Chick Corea for the rest of the night. This became an increasing problem at every performance until one night during our closing number of the evening where everyone would take mini-solos after being introed, this putz (who'd had more mota than usual on this night) proceeded to play a second keyboard solo while I was trying to play mine. I got so pissed off that when the show was over I confronted him over it backstage, and I forget his response but it couldn't have been very positive because I do remember yelling "YOU SON-OF-A-BITCH!!", throwing a chair at him, the rest of the band trying to get between us, me punching him in the jaw in the ensuing cluster****, and being still pissed off enough to take my frustrations out on whatever was nailed down while still screaming at the band's co-leaders "I WANT HIM OUT OF THIS BAND AND OUT OF MY LIFE!!!" This ended up a moot point because the next week I got damn near knocked out onstage by the lead guitarists' flying BC Rich guitar (he used to fling it over his shoulder at some moments a-la Cinderella) and had to take a hiatus from performing while I recovered. (I came back three months later to play one more weekend of dates with them, having taken an opportunity to play with some other cats a month after the accident.)

Instance number two was a few years later with another band; our rhythm guitar player, who had a fondness for mota, kept vowing that he was going to smoke a joint before our first show (a mini-set we'd been invited to play by, not ironically, my previous band!). We kept trying to talk him out of it, but he made good on his word. I didn't hear how he sounded onstage, but the guitar player of the headlining band did and turned him down accordingly.

Instance number three was during the year I was deejaying at a local club and I think I may have related this story elsewhere in the Talkbass forum but one night one of the regular bands had done two of their three sets, then their bassist went to the bar half-a-block down from where the club was to hang out, and proceeded to get three sheets to the wind. Maybe more sheets than that, but the consequence was that he was in no condition to play. The rest of the band ran up to me and asked me to fill in at the last moment (I'd jammed with them a few times before on a song or two) and I ended up onstage for all but a few songs of the last set.

Only once, my 21st birthday. Another band let myself and my guitar player sit in. We all decided on Hang On Sloopy...in Eb! (Damn horn players!) We get into it, and somethings just not right. I look over at my guitar player, and he yells at me Eb! I look down at the neck, and had to physically count the frets in my state. I yelled back at him " I'm in eb!!" He looks down at his guitar neck and yells back " OOps!"

This past Friday was the drunkest I've ever played. I was concentrating on my playing so hard, yet I just couldn't seem to play right. It was so bad. The show seemed to fly by. But I think that was my rock bottom. The problem was there was an opening band playing and the bar owners were trying to be nice by making sure our glasses never got empty. Which gave us too much time to not get drunk, and I hadn't really eaten that day, so I got hit hard.

The funny thing is, it really wasn't a bad show. Nobody seemed to notice my playing. But I did, and I won't be drinking like that again at a show.
