Double Bass Wavering pitch

Hello,

I'm pretty sure this is not a string issue, maybe related to setup. When tuning my bass (electric tuner), the E string settles down nicely to one steady pitch, but it seems the other strings don't want to find one pitch and stay there, they waver up and down a bit. It also happens when I use the harmonics. This is the second set of strings I've noticed this with. Is this normal? Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Electronic tuners will always do that. Strings waver in pitch 'cause the string length gets changed when it is pulled (or bowed) and settles back down.

First I'd just get good at tuning by ear. Who cares what a tuner says if it sounds good to your ear. That said I use an electronic tuner if the bar is loud and it is hard to hear or if the piano is insufferable.

Bottom line don't pul or bowl the strings so hard. I've heard of guys even plucking lightly up near the nut. Good luck.

Make sure you are keeping your bow speed/pressure/placement consistent. If you're not using a bow, you should be as pizzicato doesn't have enough sustain for the tuner, and pizz generally makes the pitch go sharp.

Thanks guys!! I tuned by ear for years, but it seems the clubs have been getting louder lately!! Even by ear I really notice it on the high D harmonic on the D string, was just wondering if there was anything more to it. Thanks for the input!!

I'd assume there is more to it. If you can hear it, then it's not a tuner issue. Experts: Can a wolf tone do this?
