You mean they'll "give" you stuff at manufacturer's cost AND still allow you to use other gear?

Gosh, I guess I need to get out more.
There's a lot of misconceptions regarding endorsement deals here on TB, lol.
Of course, I don't know the details of Jimmy's deal, but I have enjoyed multiple deals over the years (both with a paper contract and informal 'handshake' agreements) as well as being privy to many of my colleagues' deals here in Nashville.
Typical deals involve the artist/musician recieving free and/or heavily discounted products in exchange for making that product "one of the artist/musicians primary instruments or accessories". You are expected to feature the product in any television appearances, album or web credits, etc. Increasingly, companies are asking for social-media related efforts as well. Artists are usually asked for concert tickets, contest participation, etc. Feedback on products is also usually asked for.
Often, the benefits of an endorsement deal include free service and parts as well. I've never had a Mesa deal, but I
understand that they don't give away amps for free- but offer them at a deep discount & include free servicing, tubes, etc...
Companies understand that it may not ALWAYS be possible or practical to use their product. Fly dates, international challenges and need for creative variety are all understood. However, showing up in competitive advertising or showing up on a high-profile media opportunity with a competitve product are frowned
heavily upon! For instance, Fender doesn't provide an amplifier for me whenever and whereever I play, but I had to fly to NYC once for an MTV/Hard Rock Live concert taping- for that Fender sent a guy out with my preferred rig! The bigger companies also help out in NY, Nashville and LA with convenient loaners.
Another popular TB myth is that endorsers get paid cash to represent products. This is
extremely rare (
as in almost never happens rare!). Unless you have achieved guitar/bass-god status (Clapton, for instance) - nobody is sending you a check! Endorsement deals come out of a companies marketing department. If they feel your endorsement and exposure level is worth $x.xx, they'll give you value up to $x.xx
