This could be something.

That looks good! And €1,90 for a 40mm nail is doable. Unfortunately, because I live just outside Germany, I pay €18 S&H instead of €6,90. Oh well.

You could heat the head of a regular nail, and give it a few hits with a heavy hammer. Kind of a relic treatment.
Or you could use wooden dowels.

Anyway, screws would not look more out of place than plywood, so you might as well use screws. Brass screws could look cool on it. It's a fantasy setting with 17th century-like tech, but maybe in that world they came up with screws earlier.

So the two distance blocks are glued in....

.... and screwed in.

These screws can be seen from the back, but I'll deal with that later. From their haphazard placement you can see that I intend them to become invisible.

Then the pole was fastened. These screws will automatically be out of sight.

By the way, the reason I didn't order some of those beautiful hand-wrought nails, is it'll take two weeks. That's a luxury I don't have.

In other news, I bought some rivets for the leather.

I bought two packages, so that's twenty rivets. Except one of the rings is missing, so I have nineteen.

To get familiar with the system I used this offcut from the leather, and I'm proud to say I only needed one rivet to get it right:

So now I can start punching the leather top. By the way, it's entirely possible that I buried that missing ring in the one rivet I used. These things have a way of hiding by clinging to each other.

That's probably a good idea. I will admit I haven't given it much thought until now.

I did consider putting fiberglass tape around the inside, but I don't know if it's available here.

If you’re coopering it make a couple of metal rings, rivet them together and drive them on like a barrel. It will contribute to the “look.” If nothing else you probably want something along the lines of kerfed linings top and bottom like on an acoustic guitar.
