Your picture examples are using rawhide as opposed to tanned leather.

With rawhide, you apply it wet, and as it dries, it shrinks pulling it taut.

Tanned leather on the other hand, will stretch when wet, but won't contract in the same way as it dries.

I'm learning something new every day here.

I would've guessed one of the kitchen shears....

My leatherworking toolbox has at least that many pairs of scissors, plus the dedicated sewing shears, plus the shop scissors, plus my electrician scissors, plus several sets of kitchen shears. My wife makes cards, and has her own stash of various scissors. And, we homeschool so I have a classroom worth of kids scissors.

There's no kidding, probably 50 pairs of scissors in the house.

I don't know yet. It's too early.

You see, the leather isn't fastened yet. I just mocked things up for those last two close-up photos, in order to show y'all where I'm heading. The first thing I need to do now is make some more of those cute Padauk pins. Also, some of the metal rings have very sharp edges on the inside. I must file those off, or one of them will surely cut the rope.

So, as the saying goes: I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

You might want to modify those pins so that the rope is held as close as possible to the sides of the instrument in order to minimize the leverage.

I considered it, but I couldn't see the disadvantage of having the rope a few mm away from the side. What leverage are you referring to?

Those few mm act as a lever that aplies more force over the pin and the hole in the sides than if it were right against the side.

Good point! Like I said, I did consider the design you are proposing, it seemed to make sense. I just wasn't sure if my limited skills would be up to it, as it requires more millimeter-precision.
