I just discovered that removing a jazz bass pickguard + thumb rest + screws will take away roughly 1/4 lb.

If you removed the tuners as well, I'll bet you could shave off at least another 3/4 pound.
Switch to lighter strings at the same time and it's like you removed a 1/4 lb with cheese
If you put that bass down, it will lose between 175 and 225 (est.) pounds.
April is a heavy month, everyone agrees. Try your heavy basses in May, much better right?
Lose the pickup cover and the control plate and lose another 4 ounces.
With a belt sander there's almost no limit to the weight you can take off.
In longer months, proportionally, your bass is lighter. That's just science.

I removed the tort because it made the bass play slower with it's bluesy classic rock kind of vibe. The chrome with the red is more like a blazing speed kind of thing so I can get down with the fusion bits. It's a tradeoff I know, but those 4 ounces vs blazing speed you have to pick your battles.
And are you sure you need that G string?
Take off the strings you don't use-more savings.
When my back is sore, I just take a used string, tie it to my big toe and grasp the other end in my teeth. Voila! Lightweight bass.
chamber the body, over bore the truss rod cavity, seal all control areas .... then ......
