Weird Amps Nobody Remembers

I have a BullFrog cabinet.
My parents got it for me when I was 15 or so.
Pretty sure it's got two 12" and one 18" in it.
It's pretty bulky and fairly heavy.
I've got it in storage, I'll try to get a pic of it one of these days in the near future.
I can't find any examples to post!

BFI (Bull Frog Industries) is a long gone company from the 1970's and early 1980's.

In the early 70’s, Univox made a bid for pro respectability when they introduced this series…

I knew a guitarist, Kim Pryor, formerly of SF glam punk outfit Stone Fox, who went on to Melissa Auf Der Maur’s solo band; she had one of those Univox heads and a dual 2x12 rig and loved it…

I bought one of these brand new in '96. The amp controls were really cool, with the deluxe knobs and detents, and the overall construction was quite robust.
It sounded about how you would expect now from looking at it. Actually pretty good if a drastic mid-scoop is what you are wanting. In the designers' defense, that sound was kind of "in" at the time. But even young '90s me decided I needed to keep searching for a better stage blend.

Those weird Trace combos sounded fantastic.

Sat great in the mix. Incredibly loud (and heavy) for the size.

Amazing nobody has copied the design.

One of the guys in my high school band circa 1976 had one of those Univox UX1501 amps for a brief period. He had it driving a Danelectro 3x15" cabinet, which as you might imagine was ridiculously tall, but, unless you'd seen one you wouldn't imagine how ridiculously and disproportionately narrow and shallow it was. In short, it was an unstable column, an accident waiting to happen...which did, after a gig when some kids got onstage and bumped into it. The speaker cabinet toppled over, the tube head (which had been perched on top of this huge unstable column) bounced a few times before self-destructing into a dozen or so pieces, and that was the end of his Univox.

He replaced it with an Ampeg V-2 head, which is slightly more memorable than the Univox. Still kept the Danelectro 3x15" though.

[edit: I just remembered, the toppling amp also crushed his Danelectro (single-pickup, shorthorn) guitar. So in addition to buying a replacement head, he bought a replacement guitar, an Ovation Breadwinner...now there's a guitar everyone will remember if you've ever seen one.]

Sure, I’ve seen some Breadwinners…Colin Newman from Wire played one, then Eastwood Guitars recreated it in tribute to him. One of my favorite late 70’s bands, I finally got to see them live in the 2000’s, but he had switched to G+L by then, and now he uses an Airline repro…
