Maybe try an old 8 Ohm 2X10, like an Eden or SWR. If it's just for 'home play' chances are the room isn't too huge. Sometimes, when using strange cabinets it's not a bad idea to take chances with EQ.

My 4Pro, for instance, could handle this easily with any cab combination because it has two sides.

my 4x12... its a dark sounding cab and I need a little more bite on the top end and in the high mids... any suggestions?

Add a closed-back mid and a simple HPF crossover to your 412; all you'd need is the mid, a hole-saw, and a suitable capacitor

Any cabinet can, with the addition of the right resistors in the right places, be made inefficient. In fact, if you want, it can be made to where it doesn't produce sound at all.

ok its an old TXF cab I dropped Eminence delta 12LF's in and cnc'd a custom grill/ put blacklights in…I really am fond of the cab for sentimental reasons... its got a level control for the horn on the back panel... what if I took the signal running from the crossover, and ran it to an output jack instead of the horn? couldn't I use that to run an additional high/mid cab that doesn't take much juice? I could then set the level myself and blend the two, right?

4 of those drivers in one cabinet shouldn't be all that inefficient - are you sure they're all operating, and all hooked up with the same polarity?

Are you sure you don't have them all hooked up in series or something?

oh it'll peel the flooring up when I give it some juice, just can't get much in the way of mids and highs...plus, its just not as efficient as either of my 2x15 cabinets, so they always get the nod... I was looking for the inefficient cab to pair with it, because it almost always gets drowned out by any cab I pair it with...

LFs don't have much top end so it sounds like the classic "wrong speakers for the cabinet" scenario. They weren't designed to work together. Your crossover probably isn't a good match either.
Remove and sell the LFs and install speakers that are appropriate for the TXF. Or make it Somebody Else's Problem and get something made to sound good, sentiment be damned!

A Peavey 412TXF with a quad of Eminence Delta 12LFA should bring a decent amount of sound.

Since you already have an opening and crossover for a horn, add one (if you haven't already)

I do like the cab... maybe I didn't word this properly... the horn does the thing its supposed to... I'm really just wanting to milk more mids out of her... I guess some radical EQ'ing could do it... but why not have some fun? I think I'm going to wire the leads from the crossover to an output jack and run this little 1x12/ horn PA topper I have off of it instead of the horn...where I can control how much sound comes out and blend the 2 cabs to my liking...

Man, honestly, any cab will be a crapshoot. It might sound glorious paired up with your 412 BFF cab. But it might sound like crap. I would just keep perusing your local CL and something will pop up. Even a 210 with a more mid focused sound might help.

Also, being that you're obviously into the DIY thing, you might be able to slap together a sealed mid driver and horn cab and run it with a crossover.

was thinking about that.... I built a nice 2x12 last year that sounds fantastic... though not with my 4x12... as it's a lot more efficient... lol.
