Weirdest lineup matchup?????

My classic rock/country cover band with a gospel track act.

Restless Heart (80s era country band) opening for Grand Funk Railroad. I was doing sound for that show, and it was actually kinda cool. After RH finished their set, they all came out and hung at the monitor position with us while Grand Funk did their thing. The RH guys were like little kids they were so excited watching them...

I do sound at a "multicultural festival" every year and the band lineup is usually something like...greek music, then jazz, then indian music, then a rock band, then some R and B headliner. Throw a gospel or rap band in there too...

I once saw John McLaughlin performing an acoustic set with Christian Escoudé at the Rainbow in London. The support act was the reggae band Steel Pulse, and halfway through their set Steve Hillage joined them on stage. Now THAT was a weird mixture.

These are GREAT!! Keep em comin!!!

Found out today, my whole band's not actually playing due to time slot problems, though various members of the band, myself included will be performing covers as part of School of Rock. We'll be representing the Philadelphia Area Schools of Rock, doing two Zeppelin tunes, two Ramones songs, and of course, one Grateful Dead song. The School of Rock will have their own stage set up throughout the weekend, though I'll be performing on Saturday at an as-yet-undisclosed time. If you're headed to Vibes, let me know via PM!!! Till then, keep the weird lineups going!!

Well, remember that in the '60's, and especially at places like the Filmore, there was a trend to purposely "mis-match" bands to "open people's minds" to other kinds of music. So having an old Blues guy, or a bluegrass band, open for a hard rock band, or simply bands from different genres, was not only common but done on purpose.

I still find it tough to imagine Rush opening for Kiss. In the Rush documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage, they talk about this. At one point, The Tubes, Rush, and Kiss all played on the same bill. The first time I saw Rush live they were the opening act for Boston in the 70's. The first time I saw Rush as the headliner, the opening bands were Judas Priest and Uriah Heep.

Rush has played with KISS more than anyone.

And some other odd acts they played with were: Primus, Melvins, Chalk Circle, The Runaways...

They asked Nirvana to open for them, but were told by management that Nirvana was too alternative.

I still can't believe Rush toured with the Melvins. I would kill to see that lineup.

And yeah Clutch plays some weird shows. I saw Murphy's Law and Vision of Disorder open for them in 2001.

Reviving this few-month old thread with a new weird lineup: my friend's death metal band (Tears of Requiem, check them out on Facebook) just confirmed a gig opening for Bret Michaels at the Croc Rock on Friday...unless Bret Michaels has had a very drastic style shift since I last listened to him, sounds like a very strange matchup. Any other suggestions?

I remember once I saw a local Futureheads-ish band opening for Melt-Banana...

My old band (britpop/rock/pop) twice had metal/emo bands opening for us who scared off the audience...my current band (acoustic indie/rock) had a god awful screamy-metal covers band doing their own versions of Kasabian and pop stuff...2 bands pulled out of that gig - one of them has since played a rock/metal venue down the road so its probably not a bad thing they cancelled...
