Customers demand cheaper products. Industry seeks ways to cut costs (while increasing profits - everybody loves capitalism!). This is a logical consequence. Welcome to the WalmartWorld. Anyone who has every gone to a local store to look around and then bought online to save money, or who shops at a big box store instead of a local small business, has contributed to the Disney layoffs. No free lunch, and if you buy based on price then don't be surprised when your job becomes devalued or sent offshore.

Truth
The mom & pop shops never had a chance when customers demand low price, yet we complain about GC
Hate to admit that I too shop online although if I go into a store to try something I don't use their showroom and time to buy it cheaper
A lot of folks are in tough financial straights and have to go lowest price; many are saving money but selling out their own jobs
Most are just cheap; Home depot is so large they force manufacturers to build lower end products just for them like Moen & Kohler which compromises the brand

Fender jumped the shark marking wise years ago; Disney and Nike have more professional credibility than Fender by a mile
Thankfully the American made Fender guitars and basses are still very good and priced fairly; hopefully the manufacturing staff still enjoy what they do as they create great tools for musicians.
How great would it be to see Fender making good decisions and not releasing products with reliability issues, or killing other solid brands!
