Hello!

I have to admit I was not a fan of Bongos... I've had a 2001 black Stingray, a 2005 black Stingray5 matching headstock, and a 2006 30th anniversary crimson red Stingray.

And just now I've received a fantastic Bongo HH stealth. I always loved black basses, and especially with black hardware. So it was a logical thing to order a MusicMan stealth! But which one? A Stingray? A Sterling? A Bongo? I don't know why, but when I was looking to find my new bass, I was in love more and more with the Bongo! So I post this reply but I still haven't heard that monster tone!

Of course I'll let you know my feelings about it, but first of all I wanted to share my pleasure with you!

I just picked up a new Bongo and other than trying to find a set of strings that I like on it I am hooked so far.
Speaking of hooked how bout hooking up a brother with a club number?

After seeing all these pics - I am going to reverse my opinion and now agree that the pick guard should be optional. Sometimes it is great - but with other colors the body shape really shows the brighter colors. I would remove mine - but then I have the holes - and the screws would be tacky....

Any ideas?

Since my first post in January I've gotten two more Bongo fivers, a L.E. Blue Dawn HH and a Cabernet pearl/BFR rosewood neck HS. I'm also a person who does not like the way a contrasting color oval pickguard looks on the Bongo. I've experimented with clear guards and no guards, after all, I've removed the ash trays from fenders and the pup covers from ricks. The area under the guard on a Bongo is beautiful and needn't be covered up but Mr. Ball at MM insists it's a trademark issue and they will remain (unless you're somebody famous like Bovinehost or Dave LaRue :) ).

I didn't like the clear guards due to the reflections that still obscured the finish so I decided to put #2 phillips CS screws in the holes and decided that's the way I like it for now. The guards are attached with #4 screws which are way too large, a #3 screw's head is still too big and sits on top of the paint. MM puts a small counterbore in the paint at the screw holes and a #2 screws sits just inside this hole and get the head of the screw at or below the surface of the paint. I'm OK with this as everything is flush and the only other alternative is refin. #2 screws are very hard to find, I found some at a hobby shop in some cheap wooden, made in china jewelry boxes.
(In the Cab pearl pics I had the screws too deep and have since adjusted them out so they are flush with the paint surface)
