on friday i went to a gig at the local youth club because all my friends were. i know i wouldn't enjoy it because it was death metal stuff (what do you expect with a name like "forsaken"). so i got there a bit early and noticed 3 people setting up their stuff: a drummer and 2 guitarists. so i ask one of the people there "where's their bassist?" and he replied "i'm not sure, might be here soon". the gigs about to start and still no sign of a bassist and i'm starting to think ***. the gig starts, and the band sets a great first impression by saying "we're going to perform tonight without a bassist, but who needs em anyway? they're ****". as soon as i heard that i left. seriously, what type of **** is that?

edit: i heard later that they sounded awful.

I hate to say it, but bass players in metal bands seem redundant. I mean, they already have a rhythm guitarist playing uber-low into the bass frequencies. Unless you're Paul Romanko or someone with his chops, it seems like a losing fight, IMHO.

That being said, sounds like the band in question is a bunch of jerks. Sheesh.

you were satarting to think "sweet" before the band started and they excalimed that bassists were "too awesome and make our guitarists look bad." Or at least thats what im guessing since there were some edited words in your post.

i must agree most metal bands make the bassist look like a waste, only a few actually use them. brain drill for example is a band that uses all instruments extremely well listen to sadistic abduction but i must warn you ( Extreme Metal )

I was in a band w/ someone who thought they were the band, an ego that couldn't fit through the doorway. She would always disregard anything we had to say, because 1. I was much younger, so I was just a stupid kid, what did I know? 2. The drummer, and I quote exactly, "should just sit back there and shut up." So behind her back, me and the drummer had this running joke, " ah but what do we know, were just the rythym section!"

I for one as a metal player am tired of getting **** from people saying that the metal bassist, has no real role and provides nothing to the band. Its too bad that metal styles are seen to often as just junk, and its worse that this feeling is found throughout TB as well. Its bad enough that the genre i chose to play is viewed this way, in addition to the fact that my accomplishments are often belittled, because i "only play bass". It is the responsibility of a community to support its members, not discriminate because of differences in opinion. When we care about ourselves more than the music, It defeats the purpose of even playing in the first place.

Way to take one post and peg it on the rest of us, bub, thanks a bunch.

Little bands with little kids and little understanding of arrangement and orchestration isn't such a big deal. Granted, I wouldn't be terribly happy to hear another "bass players are useless" crack at any show I go to either, but such is life. Everybody grows up eventually, even metal players. :D

Eh, this thread is the old series of redundant assertions. "Bass is essential", "Death Metal is garbage because I don't like it". Boring. Why bother with this stuff if you don't really know what you are talking about. You aren't making any points here just venting your preferences.

I look at that situation that the bassplayer was completely unprofessional and the guys there did what they had to given the guy didn't show up. Sad situation, but it's not the genre of music they are playing beyond any arbitrary assumptions that people that play death metal don't know what they are doing intrinsically. Which I can guarantee is a silly assumption to make.

By the way anyone that says that bass is redundant in "death metal" really has no idea about that genre and should probably quit while they are ahead.

But it has been going around alot. Ive already spoken out in another thread. There is a lot of metal players on TB at the moment, so put up with it. like Dont go to the BC Rich club, just to say how you hate them and dont know how people could like them :scowl::mad::scowl:

I'll play Devils Advocate. Perhaps they don't hate all bassists. Could be they hate just the one who is always late, misses gigs, or had a falling out with.

It really depends on their intent on their statement. you could say that saying "who needs a bassist" is basically saying your band is one big muddy mess that you just drown out any hope of having audible basslines so it really doesn't matter.

I wouldn't say bass is 100% redundant in metal genres, at college there was a metal band lacking their bass player that day and thought "Hey why not join in, metal aint my thing, but it's still playing" - Scooted over with my Cort with light gauge strings (hehe) and managed to groove over it pretty nice...:bassist: even if the 2 guitarists were in C standard and I was in E standard :ninja:

good point, i never thought of it like that. but they way they said it sounded like they just didn't care about having a bassist in the first place. and incase it came off like it in my orig post, i have nothing against death metal. i'm just not into it, which made it easier to leave. it's not like you had to pay to get in.

The problem is that most guitarists of that genre don't give much room for the bass, especially having in mind that everything is HEAVILY distorted, and most of the time the guitars are tuned in C or D.
Another problem is kids (mostly) who like this genre and wanting to join a band, they go the "easy way", the bass.
It's the truth i think that most (not all, i say most) bassist of this genre have poor technique and play mostly root notes, in a heavily distorted i-only-want-to-look-badass bass.
Even if u're a bassist in a such band and don't do that, u'll must have seen that most other bassists of similar bands do it. At least that's what i've noticed in the scene here in Greece.
If we take all that in mind, and add that the guitarist are in this case guitards, i see why that statement came out.

Yesterday my friend said he'd been playing Guitar Hero 3, and found that on all the songs the bass was easier and repetitive. He asked me if this were true in real life..
Its the kind of thing like that that makes me sad. :rollno:
