Good post but it is totaly objective if the sound lacks because of no bass, they might have been bad even with a bass player. But the way the posts move in to the area of metal bass is great as it shows misconception of the genre.
Playing "Metal bass" is easy the most misunderstood of the genres that a bass player will encounter for a number of reasons. The main stumbling block is the role of the bass, not to be confused with the tone of the bass. The role of the bass in Metal is many, it has to provide bottom end, it has to support the guitars, it has to be part of the drums, it has to be rythmic, it has to be melodic it has to be.......hang on a bit..... its the same as any other bass playing job as all the essental points have to be covered.
I think what is needed is more understanding of the disipline of the different genres as bass players we find ourselves playing in at a top level to fully understand the demands that are put apoun our playing, and key words are top level. Those who have mastered the art are at the top level and in the top bands and work with the top players and producers in the top projects. Listen to and UNDERSTAND their approach, attitude, and musical interpretation of the music and make you own minds up if you think its easy ....or good playing.
