As much as I love tort you've only got yourself to please so if you want (for example and I'm not suggesting it) a hi-vis yellow guard then go for it.I also know that I will be scorned if I don't go the Tort route.
You can add "old" to that in my case.@delta7fred maybe we are just grumpy Englishmen which is why we like the same things!
For PG material, I'm really liking the black Bakelite. To get me a piece of real Bakelite is a small fortune. I also know that I will be scorned if I don't go the Tort route.

Nice, I'd go with black if you want a pickguard, you also could go with a clear plexi guard to get the idea of a guard and still show the beautiful grain.
+1 for Wills suggestion. Black will match the darker grain details nicely but a clear Perspex pick guard will show off the wood grain with protection
